Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is the first of the two MOBA games that originated from the Defense of the Ancients WC3 custom map. After Dota 2 launched, there was a fair bit of rivalry between the two supporting communities, although both games were extremely well received by the pro and casual players.

HoN was launched by S2 Games as a standalone title in May 2010. In July 2011 it became free to play, just as Dota 2 was about to make a big boom with his first The International in August of the same year. Despite the big prize pool and the completely free to play features of Dota 2, HoN continued to exist, surrounded by a devoted community. In May 2015 Garena purchased HoN from S2 Games and passed the development to Frostburn Studios.

Yesterday, the HoN developers announced what will be the last gameplay update for Heroes of the Newerth. Version 4.7.3 will be deployed on 26th of February 2019 and it’s planned to be “the final patch that contains major content and major changes.” According to the developer team, future patches will be delivered only if they are necessary deemed and it will mainly contain only bugs fixes and/or balance changes.

HoN brought to Dota 2 some of the greatest players and personalities. Perhaps the most iconic ones are Johan “N0tail” Sundstein, Tal “Fly” Aizik, Kalle “Trixi” Saarinen and Adrian “Era” Kryeziu who came together with Fnatic from HoN to Dota 2, back in 2012. Around the TI3 era, when the four would participate at their first ever The international, the Dota 2 community was still harsh on them often calling the Fnatic lineup “HoN trash.” A few years later, Notail became a TI champion and together with Fly, he built OG, one of the most beloved teams worldwide. Kyle Freedman and his brother Zakari “Zfreek” Freedman are also two of the most successful HoN players who embraced a Dota 2 career. Much like N0tail, Fly, Era, and Trixi, the two came to Dota 2 two with most of their HoN team members, however, they did it on the second half of 2014. Ludwig “zai” Wåhlberg made his great debut as a pro player in HoN. In 2012 he became the youngest player to win a DreamHack HoN championship at the age of 14. A year later Zai had also switched to Dota 2.

More recently, one of the greatest HoN casters joined the Dota 2 world as well, and despite his enormous popularity in HoN, where he also has his own announcer pack, Nick “BreakyCPK” Caras has taken baby steps and works on grinding his way into the top tier Dota 2 casters. Upon the announcement of the last HoN patch, Breaky held an AMA session over Reddit, which can be found here.

With the curtain going down for HoN, some of the Dota 2 community members are wondering if any of the heroes which have no correspondent in Valve’s game will ever make the transition as well. Even some of the players are looking forward to that possibility.

with HoN dying, hope valve buys the heroes so when they’re added I’m already practiced

Only time will tell if HoN will get to live in our memories through some possible heroes transferred to Dota 2. In any case, those who played both HoN and Dota 2 will never forget where and how everything started.
