New MTG Rowan Throne of Eldraine Cards Leak in France
We still have a couple of months until the release of the upcoming fall expansion for Magic: The Gathering called Throne of Eldraine. So far, Wizards of the Coast has only given us teases of artwork and the theme of the set but no cards have been revealed thus far. Well, until now that is.
MTG Throne of Eldraine France Leak Details
Three Rowan Throne of Eldraine cards have leaked in France, giving us a glimpse at the French versions of three cards in the upcoming expansion, according to Magic Spoiler. It is uncertain at this time where the leak originated from, be it a distributor, translator, store, or what have you.
Regardless, the photos of the three Rowan Throne of Eldraine cards have been uploaded, despite the less than stellar resolution of the pictures. With these cards revealed, we have our first look at the upcoming expansion and gives us an idea of what to expect from it when it releases in October.
It is interesting that of all the cards to leak, it was not one but three different Rowan Throne of Eldraine cards. With so much focus put on the Planeswalker, it is possible that he will be the featured character for the expansion, much like Chandra was in the recent Magic Core Set 2020.
This coincides with the fact that head designer at Wizards of the Coast Mark Rosewater revealed the artwork for Rowan at the recent Throne of Eldraine reveal panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. All signs are pointing at the character getting a lot of love in this fairy tale-themed fall expansion.
This would actually be unfortunate if that is the case, though, because that would mean yet another focus on the red color decks and potentially mono-red aggro, specifically, like was the case with Chandra, Awakened Inferno in the most recent addition to the game.
Though there has been an upswing of pro players using the Bant Scapeshift deck recently, it doesn’t mean that red should still get some love even if mono-red aggro decks are one of the best answers to the Scapeshift deck. Regardless, these three new cards from the expansion are awesome.
Rowan, Intrep >
Having been translated by Magic Spoiler, we can dig into what these cards say and what they will likely be doing in their English version as well. Starting from the top is the legendary Planeswalker card Rowan, Intrepid Sparkmage. While a really cool name, it is possible the name or other words in the translation could be changed in the final English release so keep that in mind.
This is a mythic rare Planeswalker card that could be the featured one in the entire series. It costs five mana to summon Rowan, Intrepid Sparkmage, two of which must be red. For his plus one loyalty ability, you are able to select one target creature and it will receive plus three to attack and first strike until the end of the turn.
That’s a simple but useful enough ability for gathering up those loyalty points on the field. Then, the second ability costs two loyalty points and what it does is deal one damage to up to two target creatures on the field. In addition, those targeted creatures will not be able to block this turn.
Finally, Rowan, Intrepid Sparkmage’s final ultimate ability costs nine loyalty points and is quite bizarre but amazing. Until the end of this turn, you will control all of the creatures along with haste. In addition, if they are tapped, you will untap them. Presumably, this also includes enemy creatures.
This is an insane ultimate ability that allows you to potentially end the game right there with that one move. Needless to say, this new Rowan legendary Planeswalker card will be giving some more love yet again to the mono-red aggro deck. Though that is the most important card leaked, it’s not the only one.
Rowan’s Bodyguard Creature Card Revealed
The other two cards relate to Rowan as well and pair well with the Intrepid Sparkmage. Next up is the card Rowan’s Bodyguard. This female human knight costs four mana to summon to the field, one of which must be red. Unfortunately, the low resolution leaked picture covers up the stats so we aren’t sure about her attack and health.
But what we do know is that those stats will likely be important to the card, based on the abilities that she has. To begin with, she has haste so she is able to come out of the gates running as soon as she is summoned to the field and attack with no summoning sickness whatsoever.
The ability that Rowan’s Bodyguard has is that she gains plus three to attack as long as the player also controls a Rowan Planeswalker card at the same time. You can already begin to see where this combo is going as Rowan, Intrepid Sparkmage is also able to give plus three to one creature.
Suddenly, you have a potentially near unstoppable force at the early to mid game as she could have up to six more attack, just based on those two abilities alone. Finally, there is one more card that was revealed and it’s one that you will likely want to play before the other two new Rowan Throne of Eldraine cards.
Rowan’s Valiant Creature Card Revealed
The final Rowan card leaked recently is Rowan’s Valiant, which does seem like an odd name when translated directly so it wouldn’t be surprising if this one is changed in the English release. This is another human knight creature card that is cut off a bit like Rowan’s Bodyguard but gives us a bit more detail.
It looks like the mana cost of Rowan’s Valiant is five mana (but could be six), one of which must be red. In addition, we can see some of its stats and we know for sure that its attack is five while its health looks to be two. Its abilities is a simple one that makes it worth playing early on, if possible.
When Rowan’s Valiant enters the field, you are allowed to search your deck for Rowan, Intrepid Sparkmage then reveal it to your enemy, and add it to your hand. Then you will shuffle up your deck again. This is a great starter card early in the match as it opens up the way for the aforementioned combos above.
We will, unfortunately, have to wait for more info regarding the upcoming expansion since these are the only cards we’ve seen thus far from it. Though with these leaks and the expansion being less than two months away, it wouldn’t be surprising for some official spoilers in the coming weeks.
Players can look forward to the official release date of MTG Throne of Eldraine on October 4 where we will be able to see all of the fairy tale goodness that the mysterious world of Eldraine will offer. The prerelease date for the fall expansion is September 28-29 with the digital releases on MTG Arena and Magic Online likely around the same time.
