Connecting through a mobile connection
EDIT: It’s a really long post. Please see my second post if you want a quick summary and don’t feel like reading essays 😛
Wow where to begin,
Just a warning that this will probably be a really long post, and I do tend to ramble and I apologise for that
I want to also give as much information as possible.
Okay now I started DOTA 2 about 6 months ago, the first MOBA game I’ve played, and I have absolutely LOVED it!!
I am really addicted and have already played over 500 games.
I have looked into other MOBA games (because of the issues I have) but DOTA 2 seems by far the best and I’m not interested in any other games.
I have also become quite a DOTA 2 ambassador 😛 and have a got a few people to start playing it
My Situation:
Basically at home we can’t get a usual ADSL line or anything because “there is too much cable theft in the area” – It’s crazy!
So the way I connect to the internet is through my Samsung S4. I make it a wifi hotspot and connect my pc to it, so basically I use the mobile data on my phone to connect to the web.
The internet speed is relatively fast (between 7 – 10 mbps), and I barely have any problems with speed or connection.
Actually an interesting fact about South Africa (where I live): Most areas have a faster average mobile broadband connection then a cable connection
Now after about a month of playing, I suddenly couldn’t connect to games, I would be stuck at the loading screen for like a minute and then it would bomb out and it gave me the error message, “Disconnected from Server, Unable to establish connection to the server.”
It would be nothing wrong with my internet, as everything else I could do was pretty fast.
I obviously googled it and it is a pretty popular message from DOTA, and many many many sort of solutions were posted.
I went and tried ALL of them!! I changed port numbers, I reinstalled steam & DOTA 2 etc etc etc, I must have done everything at least twice.
After probably 2 weeks without DOTA I was fiddling with my phone and suddenly DOTA 2 worked. But then 2 days later the problem came about. I again fiddled and I deleted the browser cache and somehow it worked. This happened a few times, where I didn’t have DOTA for a day or a few days, but I would fiddle around and something would make it work. Not always the same thing though, like deleting my browser cache didn’t work again.
Anyway I went like this until a time it didn’t work for loooong (about a week), and basically what I did was back upped and refreshed my whole phone. It worked. For 2 days. When it didn’t work again, and nothing I could do would help, I got pretty frustrated. I didn’t want to reformat my phone again.
I tried other people’s mobile phones as a hotspot and they DID work. Even ones with the same broadband supplier as me.
I tried plugging my phone in as a way to use the internet and it did not work.
So anyways w I wanted to get to the bottom of the problem, I did 3 things:
1) Cell C:
I phoned my mobile broadband provider Cell C, I explained the situation to them and they were like nah it won’t be us.
They suggested that just to make sure, try another online games and see if they work and then you know it is a problem with steam,
I did do this and anything else I tried worked, yet DOTA 2 didn’t.
I called Samsung, and in the end they basically said it is a problem with the game. They were saying if you can connect to the internet in any way fine it won’t be a problem with the phone at all. I mentioned the fact that I fiddle with my phone and suddenly it works, and they said no it is definitely problem with a game. The logic still doesn’t make sense to me but oh well.
3) Steam Support
This has got to be one of the worst experiences with ANY support with ANYTHING in my life. Wow.
The fact that you can’t call or chat to the support online or even email is just bad. Pretty much all other game platforms and big game titles will offer these options but sadly DOTA 2 and steam are lagging so far behind in that regard.
Anyway so I sent a ticket to steam support, and 2 weeks later they replied, but the only thing the support said was “Currently, we are experiencing a high volume of tickets. In order to best serve our users, we’ve sent this automated reply because your ticket appears to address a problem that may have already been resolved. “
Also gave me links to a whole bunch of help topics I had actually already read. I messaged again saying the problem has not been resolved and got a response saying to try a few things. I had a already tried all of them and mentioned it in my previous post but I did it again anyways.
Anyway in the end the guy did not offer much help and this is an exact quote:
As stated previously, mobile connections can have issues with Steam. We do not support this type of connection for online play.
It was beyond frustrating to me, because his replies were twice a week, he didn’t offer anything that actually helped (I was literally begging for just a link to something or a place where I could get any help on this – even if I have to pay), and also I KNEW the problem was fixable.
It is also ILLEGAL per the South African Consumers Protection act, as it is a game that advertises online play and says nowhere that “Mobile broadband is not supported” and I bought items etc.
Anyway after that I had pretty much given up, and was about to post on forums as last resort, but I had a brainwave and downloaded apps that deletes the cache and unneeded data stored on my phone. This actually worked!! Every time the problem has happened, I use these apps to delete cache (I have to use different ones lol), and then reset my phone and it is working again.
For the last while the error pitches up now and again and I go through the process and everything is fine.
Then yesterday happened.
I was actually playing DOTA and then I had to download an update, and suddenly I couldn’t connect to games and got the exact same error message etc
I did all my deleting cache shiz a few times and it wasn’t working.
Anyway I went to sleep thinking it would just work today! but nope
I used a different mobile broadband dongle and it didn’t work (so it’s unique to my previous problem) and also I tried on another laptop using my phone and it didn’t work.
I tried another persons steam account and it didn’t work.
I can’t test a cable connection right now, but to me that could be the only reason? Mobile broadband isn’t working?
So I was just hoping that someone somewhere could be able to help me. Honestly I would pay to get a solution to this problem.
I am also wondering if maybe someone could tell me here if DOTA 2 officially blocked mobile broadband in the last update?
And is there any plans to fix this issue? Or am I just not important enough xD (and the future potential growth of DOTA in Africa and probably India)
Anything that I am not thinking of or actually just anything that could potentially help me in any way would be much appreciated.
