One of the most feared gankers in the game, Balanar the Night Stalker is a strong hero that can dominate games during the night time. This night time period that makes him strong is his unique characteristic, to balance it out, he is very weak during the day time.
He is a very easy hero to play since he doesn’t require much farm early on and his skillset is pretty straightforward.
Night time comes for you!

Dota 2 – Night Stalker Abilities
Void
Creates a damaging void that slows an enemy unit and deals damage. Void also mini-stuns, interrupting channeling abilities. The slowing effect lasts longer at night.

- Night Duration: 4
- Move Slow: 50%
- Attack Slow: 35%
- Damage: 90/160/255/335

Your main nuke, it has a ministun as well as a slow that lasts for either 4seconds during the night or 2 seconds if used during the day.

Night Stalker horrifies the target enemy Hero, causing it to miss attacks and become silenced. The effect lasts longer at night.
- Day Duration: 3
- Night Duration: 5/6/7/8
- Day Chance to Miss: 10%
- Night Chance to Miss: 40%
Your means to keep enemies with blinks, invisible and other kind of escape skills from running away .
Hunter in the Night
Night Stalker is in his element at night, attacking and moving with great swiftness.
- Move Speed: 20%/25%/30%/35%
- Attack Speed: 30/45/60/75
The passive that makes him very fast during night time.
Darkness
Night Stalker smothers the sun and summons instant darkness, so that he might use his powers at their fullest. When used at night, it extends night time by Darkness’ duration.
- Duration: 25/50/80 seconds
- Cooldown: 180/150/120
In trouble during the day? Cast it and it’s night again. Want to gank someone but it’s day? Just cast it. However, the optimal use is to just use it whenever it is night, since it will extend it. When Darkness is maxed, you can make the game go almost perma night by using it everytime cooldown is over.

- Darkness
This is the standard Night Stalker build. You max the Void for obvious reasons since it’s your main killing tool. You take a level of silence at level 2 for utility purposes and sometimes you can even get a kill with the short 3 seconds of silence during the day.
Hunter in the Night doesn’t do absolutely nothing during the day, but you take it at level 4 because night comes soon when you are level 5,6 or 7. Darkness is taken whenever possible since it will allow extending the night, as well as getting the extra speed when it’s day.
Night Stalker Recommended items
Starting: Gauntlet, Gauntlet, Branch, Branch, Salve, Tango
These starting items will give you some nice stats to get some last hits as well as giving extra hp.
Core: Boots of Speed, Magic Wand, Urn, Bottle, TP Scroll
These items are all you need to start the killing. They will take care of both your regen and mana needs. Urn is a very good item to pick since night time should grant you a lot of kills, keeping your Urn with lots of charges to heal yourself and your team, as well as using it offensively to damage enemies.
Boots Choice: either Phase Boots or Power Treads
His passive almost grants him max move speed, so the phase ability won’t boost you by much, but it will let you run without being blocked. The stats from treads are also nice and you can change them to int if you need some extra mana. Dota 2 phoenix skill build
Ultimately both are viable, his passive already grants him 75 attack speed so in the beginning you will want to complement it with more damage that phase gives, instead of attack speed that treads give. I recommend you try both several times and stick to which one you like the most.
Strong Extensions: Aghanim Scepter, Vanguard, Black King Bar, Armlet
These items will further boost your survivability. Scepter will give you unobstructed vision during the night time AKA the legal maphack. It gives you a vision with a radius even bigger than an Observer Ward. It will tell you if enemies are alone and all their offensive movements.
The only downside is that it only works during the night. Vanguard will give you some hp and the damage block will allow you to dive towers and take more hits. BKB to make you magic immune against stunners and disablers. Armlet will give you some cheap damage and hp, if you can use it.
Luxuries: Assault Cuirass, Basher, Heart of Terrasque
Assault will give you a lot of armor and attack speed, while also helping your team and lowering enemy armor. Basher is a nice addition after it because you will have a lot of attack speed that will grant you some bashes during the team fights.
Heart will make you very very hard to kill as well as giving you a ton of regeneration when outside fights.
Night Stalker Strategy Tips
In the beginning, either choose the solo mid, or go to the safe lane with a support since he is not a very strong laner. Aim for boots and urn before the first night.
Night Stalker should gank during the night and farm during day time. However don’t suicide during the night (pick your targets beforehand and account for missing heroes) and don’t take farm from your team’s carry.
The best counter for Night Stalker is a simple TP scroll, sometimes you can’t just use Void to start the gank or enemies will just teleport away. Other times when you are killing people, their allies will try to teleport to counter your ganks.
Aghanim Scepter should be obtained in almost every game, it is THAT good. The only way you get caught out of position during the night is when you are answering the phone or something.
During the night you have a lot more vision than other heroes, so you can react faster to enemy presence than them can react to you. But the opposite is also true during the day since NS has very low sight.
Try not to prolong games too much, even if you can dominate the early game, at late game there are a lot of heroes that can take you on easily if they get farmed. Sometimes people playing Night Stalker get too overconfident and don’t realize that they can’t kill certain heroes anymore.
