The first day of the playoffs is in the books at Frankfurt and only twelve teams remain after Cloud9, Fnatic, Newbee and Newbee. Young have been eliminated. You can see where the rest of the bracket currently stands here. The action resumes tomorrow at 10:30am CET.
In the meantime, check out this piece about the reigning TI5 champions, Evil Geniuses.
The Frankfurt Major Group Stage
The first Dota Major Championship is nearly upon us. The battle begins as sixteen of the world’s best teams enter the Group Stage. You can follow all the action live in the Dota 2 client by visiting the new ‘Featured Tournament’ section. Check out real-time brackets as well as links to watch any matches you may have missed. Coverage is scheduled to begin around 10:00am CET (here’s a helpful time zone converter).
Our film team has put together a few short features for the event. The first follows CDEC’s stunning run from Wild Card underdog to championship contender at The International while capturing the thoughts of some of the biggest names in the game as they prepare for the Frankfurt Major. In addition, we’ve just added all the player profile videos from TI5 to Steam.

Enter the Haunted Colosseum
This year, we felt the best way to mark the passage of October was to create a spooky, pumpkin-filled Custom Game. Haunted Colosseum is a new 5-on-5 battle for territorial control, complete with Capture Points, devilish traps, and warrior behemoths. It’s available now, you can learn more about it here, and then launch Dota 2 to try it for yourself.
We’ve revamped the Custom Games overview page with the goal of promoting discovery of great Custom Games, and getting people into lobbies and playing as quickly as possible. To do that, we’ve replaced the “Suggested Games” list with an “Open Lobby” list, and we’ve added a new panel which highlights an automatically-chosen Game of the Day.
This update also includes the second Tribute treasure for Fall Compendium owners: the Tribute of the Sharpened Feather.
There are a lot of additional changes and improvements in this update, such as a new section in your profile for showing off your tournament tickets, a way to see and manage your downloaded replays, support for offline solo play, a new matchmaking region in Tokyo with connectivity to Taiwan and Korea, a couple of balance changes with 6.85b, and more. Check out the complete notes for the full rundown.
Soaring Cache and Compendium Coins
Available exclusively to Fall Compendium owners, the new Soaring Cache treasure contains 7 new sets, including a rare set for Warlock complete with a new Golem summon. The cache also has a very rare chance to contain the Padda’pon of Ribbi’tar Death Ward item for Witch Doctor, which can further be customized by Prismatic Gems. Additionally, every fifth Soaring Cache you open will also yield a Bonus Cache which contains either 5, 11, 24 Compendium levels, the Warlock set or the Ribbi’tar Death Ward. Unlike the previous Collector’s Cache items which were never tradable, the Soaring Cache items can be traded like normal Treasure items and are immediately giftable and fully tradable a month after the event ends. You can also recycle any Soaring Cache items for 2 Compendium Levels.
We’ve also made a number of improvements to increase everyone’s coin earnings. We’ve removed the 5% cut from Coin Wager winnings and added Wager Bonuses which increase how many coins you can win from a match wager as well as allowing you to earn Coins even when the opponents did not wager. Compendium owners also now have a chance to receive a Coin Treasure or 750 Coin Pack at the end of a match.
When the Reborn Update released last month, new music arrived with it. The Dota 2 Reborn theme is an update to the original Dota 2 theme that also incorporates several new melodies which have been added to the game over the last several years. While the orchestra played, the cameras looked on. We’d like to present this look at the recording of the Dota 2 Reborn theme.
We are also pleased to announce that we have begun adding Russian voices to Dota’s heroes. This first release includes the default announcer and nine heroes, with more voices coming soon. Players can select which voice language they would like to hear by opening Steam and right-clicking on Dota 2. From here, select Properties, then Language, and choose your preferred voice language. Steam will then download the new language.
Several other features and fixes are also included in today’s update, including the return of Team Matchmaking, and the ability to share announcers with other players in your matches. Check out the update notes for more information.
The Frankfurt Major Teams
The dust has settled. After hundreds of Dota matches across the Open and Regional Qualifiers, eight teams have emerged victorious. These teams will now join the directly invited teams to make up the final sixteen that will compete at The Frankfurt Major.
Already, the road to The Frankfurt Major has been packed with excitement as both veteran and rookie teams have proven their worth. While former champions Alliance, Invictus Gaming, and NewBee made a return to prominence, extremely solid play was seen from Fnatic, Cloud9, Mineski and (Monkey) Business. Especially impressive were Team Unknown, a Peruvian squad who entered the Open Qualifiers and then fought all the way to the Main Event through the Americas Qualifiers.
The Main Event for The Frankfurt Major will take place at Festhalle Messe in Frankfurt, Germany this November 16 through 21. The sixteen teams will battle over six days, using the same Main Event format as The International, to claim their piece of the $3,000,000 prize pool.
If you’ve never been to a live Dota tournament, don’t miss out on your chance to see the action in person, meet the players and personalities, and check out the merchandise available at the Secret Shop. Tickets to The Frankfurt Major Finals are still available, and can be purchased here.
New Features and Fixes
As part of today’s update, we’re releasing new features and improvements for item management and chat.
New to the Armory, the Collection view gives you a fully customizable space to easily arrange and organize your favorite items. With the help of a new filter to show items that aren’t already in the Collection, you can design your Armory in the way you see fit. If you had a previous layout that you liked from the legacy interface, you’ll be able to use a command to import that layout over. We’ve also added a new notification to the Armory to quickly see your most recently acquired items at a glance.
The new Item Details interface for customizing your items with gems has been enabled as well. You can access the Item Details panel by double-clicking on an item in the Armory. Additionally, the chat interface now allows you to share your party or lobby directly in any chat channel, making it easier for others to join you for a match.
A number of other important fixes are also included in this update, including many Arcana and Immortal visual fixes, as well as performance improvements. You can read the patch notes for the update here.
Dota 2 Hero Build: 6.85b Offlane Doom
The new patch for Dota 2 hit the client yesterday, so I decided to publish my Doom build (now obsolete, the hero has been reworked) for the previous patch, 6.85. It’s though as a game analysis of a very dominant strategy that was not seen that often on western servers.
TL;DR: Don’t go jungling with the new Doom in 6.85/6.85b.
The (Chinese) Doom in the 6.85/6.85b meta is played on the offlane. FORGET THE JUNGLE. If you go jungle with Doom in this meta, prepare to be called names and uninstall Dota afterwards. The important part is that you don’t play the afk-farming game with the new Doom; you need to be super aggressive with Scorched Earth, it’s that ridiculous, even after the 6.85b nerfs.
Doom is incredibly strong early on by running enemies down with his new buffed Scorched Earth in the laning phase.
As Doom you want to duolane the offlane. Lich is his PERFECT lane partner; he fixes the only real downside of Doom which is his abysmally low armor. The Doom & Lich combo is one of the strongest offlanes in this meta and almost guarantees an easy lane and at least a few kills. Lich would skill 1-1-1: We need Sacrifice to control the creep equilibrium and deny XP/Gold, Frost Blast for the slow/nuke and Ice Armor to dive towers.
A usual kill combo goes like this: Lich casts Ice Armor on Doom and initiates with his nuke to slow the enemy down. Doom pops his Scorched Earth while running him down and hitting occasionally. With Tranqs, Frost Armor and Scorched Earth, Doom can *easily* dive the T1 tower without too much hassle. Don’t back down when going in!
For ez lane harass and even more kill potential consider devouring a Mud Golem, as you get a free stun (has no mana cost) each 30 seconds which ties very well into the kill combo and skill cooldowns. Otherwise Alpha Wolf should be the usual priority, sometimes a Centaur can be good for the AoE stun.
His skill build should generally be 2-4-0-1, being less greedy and maximizing early kill potential, survivability and damage, as Scorched Earth scales so insanely well. If the lane is really easy one can get away with 4-2-0-1 (maxing Devour), but I don’t recommend it. At the start of the game skill Q first; with the bounty rune and a big jungle creep (bird, centaur or satyr) Doom hits level 2 by the 30 second mark.
For items, aside from the usual we start with a RoP (builds into Tranqs on the lane and gives much needed early game armor) into Tranqs (If with Lich, go for kill combo now), into OoV (Trade hits with the enemy at this point).
Depending on how well the lane goes, either go for Midas (2+ kills secured) or directly Drums (no or little kills) now. A Blink Dagger should be your next item to ensure getting off your surprise ultimate. NOTE: Doom’s cast point really sucks, consider going for Shadow Blade instead if you trouble casting Doom.
If you went for Tranqs, you most certainly will have mana problems by now. Consider building a Soul Ring (goes well with Tranq HP reg and Scorched Earth), Aghanims (which also helps shutting down specific heroes for real) or rely on your lane support (Arcane Boots) for mana. Patch notes dota 2 6 85b kmb Your next core item should be either AC or Shivas, for your most precious armor.
By now you should be winning the game; otherwise go for extension items like Heart/Refresher and pressure constantly with BoT.
Item build
Starting Items
- Tangos: One stack of tangos should be enough until you have Tranqs.
- Branches: They’re called GG branches for a reason.
- Ring of Protection: Gives much needed extra armor in the early game and builds into Tranqs. (Can’t be bought in the side shop so we’re buying it at the fountain)
- Stout Shield: You need last hits and with the stout shield you can stay in lane longer without regfood.
Early Game
- Tranquil Boots: Tranqs let you save Scorched Earth for when you really need it: killing other heroes.
- Orb of Venom: Slows escaping heroes even more.
- Magic Wand: Great against heroes that spam abilities a lot (Bristleback, etc.) and alleviates Doom’s low mana pool a bit.
Core Items
- Blink Dagger: Use Blink to initiate with your Ult.
- Assault Cuirass: You need armor, lots. Either go this or Shiva’s, I personally prefer AC.
- Shiva’s Guard: Go Shiva’s if a teammate already built AC.
Extension Items
- Aghanim’s Scepter: Good for your mana pool, and your Ultimate will be out of control.
- Refresher Orb: Allows you to disable two heroes.
- Boots of Travel: Be constantly pushing with these.
Situational Items
- Soul Ring: Great item if you went for Tranqs.
- Hand of Midas: Either rush this or buy it if the lane goes REALLY well.
- Drums of Endurance: For more early game initiation, usually good pickup.
- Shadow Blade: Sometimes better than Blink Dagger, because of the Doom’s abysmal cast point.
- Black King Bar: If the enemy team has LOTS of stuns.
- Arcane Boots: Consider if your struggling with your mana pool and your support don’t buy them.
