Dota 2 relics that should be brought back from the dead

Team Zephyr
They may not have been TI winners, but the story of Team Zephyr captured the hearts of Dota fans in a way no other team has before or since. These enterprising lads left their homes to move to Korea and dominated the scene there. The Korean scene hasn’t made any advancements since the Zephyr’s historic Nexon Sponsorship League victory, maybe it’s time for a reunion?

If you aren’t familiar with the story of Team Zephyr, this YouTube video from “Bonsaii” is a fantastic overview of Zephyr’s journey. It’s even Purge-approved!

Valve made the critical mistake of using the word “annual” in their descriptions of Diretide, Dota 2’s first custom game mode slash event. It first appeared in 2012 but when word got out that it would not return in 2013, the community went absolutely bonkers, spamming the internet at large with “༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ GIFF DIRETIDE ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ” memes.

Valve delivered, but the event was not seen again after it’s second year. We’ve since received new holiday events like New Bloom and this year’s Dark Moon, but maybe Diretide’s time to rise from the grave has finally come?

It’s likely that a significant percentage of Dota 2’s newer playerbase don’t even know that Wraith King wasn’t always so corporeal. Back in 2013, he was the King of Bones, the Skeleton King. Valve never gave their reasoning for the change, but the reigning theories are either Blizzard exerting pressure due to similarities to either Leoric and Diablo’s Skeleton King boss or something to do with Chinese censorship of skulls and skeletons. A “low violence” version of Skeleton King existed, but was no longer needed with the change to Wraith King.

This is definitely the most literal interpretation of a much-wanted Dota 2 reincarnation.

Team Zephyr were the little team that could, but Team DK were true legends of Dota 2. The organization formed in 2010 and became the place where some of Chinese Dota’s biggest stars made their names. Xu ‘BurNing‘ Zhilei, Daryl ‘iceiceice‘ Koh, Zhi Cheng ‘LaNm‘ Zhang, Zeng Rong ‘MMY‘ Lei Fan ‘rOtk‘ Bai, and Xie ‘Super!‘ Junhao (and Su ‘super‘ Peng too!) all played for the team at one time or another.

They missed the first TI because of visa and roster issues, but attended TI2 through TI4. They came 4th at both their first and last Tis, and just 5th-6th at TI3, but their era ended when the team went their separate ways after TI4.

The organization never recovered, and they shut their doors in November 2015. If any dead Dota 2 organization should be resurrected, it’s Team DK.

Alpine Stalker
Did you think reddit only started getting its way as a recent phenomenon? Community feedback about the Alpine Stalker’s set, an Ursa set featuring a jaunty cap and lederhosen, caused it to be removed after just about a week on the store. Since then, it’s become legendary, and the parts of the set are some of the few once-common items to be upgraded to Immortal after their removal from the store.

Owners of the set would rage to see its marketplace value tank if it came back and it more than likely never will, but it would be great to see it return in some form or other. Plenty of weird sets have been added to the game since, it would fit right in at this point.
