CS:GO vs. Dota 2 – which is the better esport?

Gameplay, professional scene, prizemoney, tournament system – Their only connection is that their headquarters are located in Seattle. Although CS:GO and Dota 2 are completely different games, they are fighting towards the same goal: To be the best esport title in the world! But which is the better esport?

Dota 2 – the loved child

If you ask experts and fans of CS:GO, they’d say that Dota 2 is by far the more loved game by Valve. Meta changes, new heroes, a Pro Circuit evolving from year to year and, of course, the biggest esports event in the world: The International. Meanwhile in CS:GO, Valve just add more stickers, loot boxes, and haven’t really evolved the game mechanics in a long time.

Bugs like the silent jump bug BIG used in PGL Major Krakow 2017 have been part of the game for years – and were simply never removed.

Although Dota 2 is still waiting for the next Battle Pass, it seems like the game (thanks to IceFrog) is way more open to changes, while CS:GO seems to be stuck on the same level.

More professional players in Dota 2

It’s not just the game which seems to be faster in evolving and bringing more variation into the game – the professional scene is way bigger and has been developing faster.

In CS:GO, the European region is pretty stacked, the same as in Dota 2. North America, although just winning a CS:GO-Major with Cloud9, is by far the weaker region in both games. Asia is the biggest difference comparing both games. While in CS:GO China is almost not existing, the Dota 2 market in the Far East is stronger than in the other regions. Dota 2 seems to be more international than CS:GO.

Next to the diversity in regions Dota 2 has more talent trying to get professional. The MMR system is helping here a lot: Pros like Maroun ‘gh’ Merhej and Amer ‘Miracle-‘ Al-Barkawi found their way to Pro teams by topping the leaderboard.

FACEIT now gives young players the chance to do the same in CS:GO – Valve itself doesn’t try to help talents in that way.

New MMR system wins

In general the MMR system in Dota 2 is a system which CS:GO players are jealous of. Especially the point system from 0-10.000 and more is a thing that’s missing in CS:GO. Global Elite is the highest rank in CS:GO and beyond that is nothing.

The difference between a low level Global Elite and a high level can be way to high – more ranks are missing in CS:GO.

Too many qualifiers are better than two majors

Next up is the Pro Circuit: Pros, Casters, Analysts – everybody is complaining that there are too many qualifiers ongoing. True that, it’s almost impossible to get an overview for the qualifiers in the new Minor and Major system. But improvements will be there for the next season.

“Our goal right now is to win WESG, for us that is the best tournament at the moment.”

The best player in the world, playing for the best team in the world, said this at the @csgo_dev Major.

In CS:GO on the other hand there are two major tournaments and they don’t seem to be that important anymore – 1,000,000 USD is just not enough to make the Major be special.

Easier to understand

Although Dota 2 seeems to have a few advantages over CS:GO, there is one thing which can help CS:GO being the best esports title: The game is way easier to understand.

Everybody understands the purpose of Counter-Strike and a headshot or a flickshot is easily to recognize as a highlight scene. In Dota 2 meanwhile ten out of more than 100 heroes, each having at least four abilities makes the game way complicated than CS:GO – beginners have a better start in CS:GO.

But in end there is one thing to say: CS:GO or Dota 2 – you can like more than one esport.

Fun Fact: Just like sports. You can like more than one esport. Liking an esport does not make others worse and yours better. It is just what you like.

Hotkeys

The hotkeys settings can be accessed by clicking on the little gear icon in the most top left corner in the main menu. Here, the player can customize many hotkeys, or select one of the many pre-set hotkey templates. Almost every key on the keyboard can be bound to something, with a very few exceptions. The exceptions usually have a set purpose in the game and thus are un-rebindable.

Contents

Unbindable keys [ edit ]

Several hotkeys have a set purpose, which cannot be changed. This results in them mostly being un-rebindable.

  • The following keys are completely unbindable: ESC, SHIFT (left and right), CTRL (left and right), MOUSE 1, MOUSE 2
  • The ALT key can only bound together with other keys, as a combo key. The ALTGR key is treated as the same key.
    • Although the ALT modifier can be bound to another key, ALT is still unbindable. When the modifier gets rebound, ALT has no use.
  • The WINDOWS KEY (left and right) (or COMMAND KEY on Apple keyboards) are unbindable, but they can be turned bindable in the advanced hotkey settings. These keys keep their default function, which is opening the start menu on the desktop. This is true even when the keys get bound ingame.
  • The PRINT KEY is fully bindable, but it also keeps its default function, which is to take screenshots.
  • The following keys are bindable on their own, but cannot be combined with ALT: PRINT KEY, TAB
  • All other standard keys are bindable.

Basic hotkeys [ edit ]

Basic hotkeys are active while playing a match. The player can change the hotkeys at any time, even during a match. There are hotkeys for abilities, items, unit actions, shop actions, chat, interface and control groups. In the advanced hotkeys, there are additional settings for unit actions, shop actions, interface and control groups, and the hotkeys for camera actions, saved camera positions and some hotkey setting options.

Hotkey templates [ edit ]

By default, the game uses the “Arrow (Default)” hotkey layout. The player can choose from a variety of pre-set hotkey templates, which can be found by clicking on “Reset hotkeys. ” at the bottom left of the settings menu. Available templates are:

Template Description
Arrow (Default) Dota 2 default hotkeys.
WASD Dota 2 default hotkeys, adapted for using W, A, S and D for camera movement.
Legacy Keys Dota 1 style hotkeys; with different ability hotkeys for every hero and unit. 1
MMO Key bindings similar to various Massively Multiplayer Online games.
League of Legends Key bindings similar to League of Legends.
Heroes of Newerth Key bindings similar to Heroes of Newerth.
Smite Key bindings similar to Smite.

1 Legacy keys can also be enabled by ticking the corresponding option in the Advanced Hotkeys settings, rather than starting over with this template.

Activating a template unbinds all hotkeys used in it from their existing actions. Hotkeys can still be changed freely after selecting a template, except Legacy Keys’ item hotkeys.

Abilities [ edit ]

There are 6 ability slots which can be used. If one slot is empty and contains no ability, it is not visible in-game, and all abilities coming after it are moved together. For example, if a unit has an ability in slot 1 and 3, but no ability in slot 2, then the 2nd slot is not visible and the 3rd ability is moved next to the 1st ability, so that there is no gap. However, the slots are still bound according to the settings. Despite the 3rd slot being moved to remove the gap, its hotkey is still equal to whatever is set for the 3rd slot in the ability hotkey settings.

Heroes usually have 3 abilities in their first 3 slots, and their ultimate always in the 6 slot. This causes the ultimate spell to always use whatever hotkey is set for the 6th slot, despite the ultimate visually appearing in the 4th slot. This is why the hotkey of the 4th ability on non-hero units is not equal to the hotkey of ultimate abilities. The non-hero unit has 4 abilities in its 4 slots and has the 5th and 6th slot empty, so they are not displayed. If its 4th ability would be moved to the 6th slot, it would make visually no difference, but change its hotkey to what is set in the 6th slot.

By default, the ability hotkeys apply to every unit the player controls. It is possible though, to bind different hotkeys to heroes, couriers and other units by turning “Unit Specific Hotkeys” on. It is also possible to bind unique hotkeys for each hero, however, this is not possible for other units. Clicking on “Clear” after having given non-hero units, couriers or an individual hero unique settings, sets the hotkeys back to what the player set as default.

The player can choose between regular cast (select spell and then select target) and quickcast (select spell and automatically cast it where the cursor is). Autocast is by default ALT+ability hotkey. It is possible to choose between regular and quickcast for couriers, non-heroes and for each hero, just like how unique bindings are possible. If the player wishes to use regular and quickcast, or wants to use different autocast hotkeys, the “Enable Advanced Quickcast/Autocast Hotkeys” setting can be turned on, which allows setting different hotkeys for regular, quick – and autocast for each slot. This also works together with unit specific hotkeys. However, advanced quickcast/autocast hotkeys is not compatible with legacy hotkeys. Here, the player can only decide between regular and quickcast, and autocast is always ALT+hotkey.

The Top 10 Dota 2 Caster Calls

Though they aren’t on the front lines of competition, casters are an invaluable part of it. They explain storylines, give valuable context and occasional game knowledge and most of all, underline the emotion of the most powerful moments in Dota history.

10. It’s a Disasta!

Affectionately dubbed the “six million dollar Echo Slam,” Universe’s game-winning ulti secured TI5 — and $6,634,661 — for EG in a truly epic slam dunk of an Aegis steal.

Almost as famous as the actual play is Tobiwan’s extremely Australian pronouncement of CDEC’s situation.

9. No one has ever done that in the history of Dota!

Before they were known as Alliance, the No Tidehunter roster were already writing their names in the history books with a revolutionary Roshan bait at DreamHack Winter 2012.

Down a game in the best-of-three, NT took an early lead by faking a Level 1 Roshan. They left Admiralbulldog as a sacrificial lamb, then the Swedish soon-to-be legends drew EG into an ambush that netted them two kills and a strong lead.

In case anyone at home didn’t realize amazing this gambit was, Tobiwan made it exactly clear with a caster call that’s almost as famous as the Roshan bait itself.

8. Liqu >

Though neither team would go on to win TI3, the lower bracket slugfest between Team Liquid and LGD Gaming was a slugfest for the ages.

While TL led LGD by almost double the kills by the time the game ended, the final team fight over LGD’s Ancient was certifiably insane and the mania certainly infected the casters as they described the blow by blow action.

7. The whole kit and kaboodle

Tobiwan is one of the most popular casters in Dota and for good reason. Not only is the Australian’s bombastic excitement infectious, but he has a talent for describing plays with turns of phrase straight out of Little House on the Story. Or whatever Australian equivalent exists.

6. Ah Fu! You thief in the night!

Another case of Tobiwan’s Australian accent and folksy sayings creating a legendary moment, there were plenty of ways he could have described LFY’s Ah Fu stealing VP’s Roshan at TI7.

However, none of them would have been as funny as: “Ah Fu! You thief in the night!”

5. 200 minutes

The bout between Cloud9 and SFZ in Star Series Season 12 in 2013 remains the longest pro game in history at 3 hours, 20 minutes and 34 seconds. It was certainly more than ODPixel and Purge bargained for when they agreed to cast the event.

However, the duo took it in good stride despite getting discernibly haggard as the battle ground on… and on. and on. Eventually, OD enlisted the aid of a soundboard to play epic music to raise the energy whenever a team fight broke out.

But the excitement was real when Qwis Ta rushed C9’s Ancient at just over 200 minutes in and brought the ordeal to a close.

4. The Play

A call as legendary as the play it accompanies, one referred to solely as “The Play,” casters LD and Luminous did an excellent job breaking down one of the defining moments in all of Dota. Dota 2 ti5 casters home

While Na`Vi only won Game 2 of the TI 2 Grand Final against Invictus Gaming, the wombo combo of Black Hole, Blade Fury and Dendi’s stolen Ravage is the true legacy of the tournament in no small part thanks to the casters’ shocked excitement.

Not to mention Dendi jumping out of his seat and yelling like he’d just won his second TI.

3. Ding Ding Ding Motherfucker

Some would say dirty humor is cheap comedy. However, sometimes a perfectly placed cuss can elevate a moment into the realm of legend. Just take the TI6 match between Alliance and Evil Geniuses where LD perfectly punctuated EGM’s last second destruction of EG’s ancient in just seven syllables.

2. WAOW

How does one condense all the action, all the drama, all the sheer emotion of Puck dodging an auto attack in a single weirdly pronounced exclamation of excitement? Just ask LD.

1. TI 3 Finish

The International 2013 was a special tournament. Not only was it the first TI with a crowdfunded prize pool, it was also the crowning achievement of Alliance’s freshman year in Dota. Dota 2 ti5 casters home The legendary roster of Loda, s4, AdmiralBulldog, EGM and Akke had already won the DreamHack Invitational 2013 and Season 6 of the StarLadder StarSeries Season 6.

After going undefeated in the group stage and dropping only one game in the upper bracket of TI3, the young guns of Alliance faced off against TI 1 champions Na`Vi in a bitter, five-game match in the Grand Final.

It was a grueling epic, and the casters were at their best for every twist and turn right up until the bitter end. Just listen to the emotion as they crown the Kings of the North champions.

What it really means to be an autistic Dota 2 player

“A little understanding and care makes our world a better place and makes us all better players.”

At the risk of sounding like I’m in a support group: I am autistic and I play Dota 2. Unfortunately, from my experience, the Dota 2 community has a poor understanding of autism. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen ‘autist’ used as an insult. I recognise that there is always going to be an element of any online community that will refuse to change, but I’d like to take this opportunity to give a bit of information to the rational majority.

To put it in the most general terms, autism is a lifelong developmental disability. It affects how you experience the world and interact with it. Your senses can be over-sensitive, or under-sensitive, and social interaction can be challenging. Your brain is wired differently from most people, and also from other autistic people—nobody is autistic in the same way. Autistic people make up at least 1% of the population, so you will have probably met somebody with the condition. You have almost certainly played an online video game with an autistic person.

Indeed, anecdotally it seems that autism is rather well represented in online and tech communities. Computers are easier than people, more predictable. This is not to say that I don’t desire social contact, but I find it difficult to navigate social situations with ease. I just need a little more time and solitude to recover from heavy socialising. Having an environment where communication is usually limited to the rules of a game is a release.

Having an environment where communication is usually limited to the rules of a game is a release.

It’s hard for me to put my thoughts into words quickly. When playing Dota, I can recognise when a hero has moved out of position and that now is the time to gank, but organising my mouth to say “ATTACK NOW!” takes longer. I tend to communicate using the chat wheel, with pre-set phrases, and by pinging the map. I am thankful there is a system set up that allows me to talk to my team-mates without having to use voice chat.

I don’t speak much even when playing with friends. I tend to interrupt them, as it’s a struggle to tell when it’s my turn in a conversation. I stammer and fumble trying to express myself, especially when I’m concentrating on something else—for example, last-hitting, or micro-managing units. However, I am perfectly capable of understanding what other people are saying, and I enjoy doing my best to be a team player.

Autism is not a learning disability, though some autistic people may also have one or more of those. Autism is commonly associated with dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia—that is, problems with reading, writing and movement. I am clumsy, and have accidentally attempted to teleport back to base in the middle of teamfights multiple times in the past. However, I don’t have a learning disability myself—it’s more like I have a deficiency in common sense.

It is incorrect to call an autistic person a ‘retard’, and the word ‘autist’ isn’t used by anybody in real life. Even my spell-checker says that it’s not a real word. Incidentally, and I know I’m not going to be the first to say this, but please don’t call players ‘retards’. I’ve met wonderful people with learning disabilities, and they don’t deserve to be brought down to the level of those who choose to jungle Legion Commander.

Being autistic does come with benefits, however. I can hyper-concentrate on a game when I am not interrupted. It’s like the game becomes my world and I’m able to devote my entire attention to it. This is a common trade-off with autism: extreme-focus in exchange for multi-tasking.

I also have a rather good memory for trivia. Dota 2 lc pro laser This is important, as Dota and other competitive games tend to build up entire libraries of situational facts and unusual interactions. How is Sven’s cleave affected by armour? Damage block still works, but the cleave damage is not reduced by how much armour you have. I admit, it’s a fringe case, but we all know in the long run everything matters. I always try to learn more, so I’m not caught out. I don’t know everything and I get facts wrong on occasion, but I have a drive to better my knowledge.

To my knowledge, autism has never been professionally diagnosed on account of a Twitch stream.

Based on what I’ve just said, you might be thinking “I know a pro-player who must be autistic!” Please, don’t. Every autistic person is different, and autism is far more than a collection of tics and idiosyncrasies. The chances are good that you are not an expert in neurology, and seeing a player being awkward in an interview is not sufficient for you to diagnose them. You’re just adding to a stereotypical perception of autism that you’ve seen on TV. This is a genuine disability that can profoundly affect your existence, and requires a qualified professional to examine essentially your entire life history with you and your family. To my knowledge, autism has never been professionally diagnosed on account of a Twitch stream.

I would not be surprised at all if there were prominent players or personalities who are autistic. Indeed, I’d love it if somebody went public and became a role model, but it would be their choice to do so. Discovering you are autistic can be intensely private, and I would not want to throw it around like a Pudge hook. Unless I knew somebody well personally, I would not attempt to talk about their potential autism, and I certainly would not do so in public.

It’s too easy to be lazy in the language you use. Competitive gaming is fighting into the mainstream, so it’s pointless to isolate and shrink our community with insults and ignorance. I’m not saying you have to like everyone, or like how everyone plays the game, but a little understanding and care makes our world a better place and makes us all better players. We can still have fun, and make jokes, and laugh—because no matter what, you suck if you jungle Legion Commander. Kappa. Dota 2 lc pro laser

Hi,
I am not sure for how long exactly as I didn’t play much Dota the last few months but at least since Version 9.17 Dota 2 has a special compatibility issue with Special K.
The game launches normally and runs fine, but it can’t connect to the Dota 2 network. So basically you can’t join a game or invite friends to play with you as long as the injection is activated. I don’t think logs are helpful here as the game is not crashing and Special K also works properly, but if you need them I will provide them later.

It is not a big deal to close Special K whenever I launch Dota 2 but I would like to use some of Special K’s features in it and in the long term, I don’t think closing one application to launch another is a handy workaround.

That’s probably an anti-cheat measurement implemented by Valve to prevent users from potentially using some of Special K’s features to grant themselves an advantage over their opponents. If such a thing is possible, I do not know, but games typically take a safety first approach when it comes to things that could potentially affect their online ecosystem. It’s also likely that they’re simply flagging Special K’s DLL file as unknown and acts accordingly.

I highly recommend just closing Special K down whenever you play a competetive online game that utilizes anti-cheat protection. It’s probably for the best.

I don’t think Kaldaien will spend much time looking into this as anti-anti-cheat measurements are a sure way of the whole project getting kicked off the Steam Community and flagged as a tool meant for cheaters, which isn’t the case.

Hmm, it might be related to the MinHook rewrites in that version, or the CBT hooks which the global injector relies upon: https://gitlab. com/Kaldaien/SpecialK/tags/skk_0_9_17

Nice find though. Hopefully that will allow Kaldaien to better investigate what’s going on.

Although I still recommend not using Special K in online based games, obviously 😀 Now at least you know the cause of it, and a workaround. Just choose to not update next time the global injector finds an update, and you should be fine with using that older version for a while.

I think I’m going to come across as an ass for saying this, but what do you need Special K for in Dota 2? 🙂

I mean, it’s interesting that it seems to break with that version but I don’t have this game or understand what use my software would be in a multiplayer game. I could be convinced to look into compatibility in some multiplayer games but I like to assume they have anti-cheat stuff that doesn’t like me anyway 😛

I genuinely am curious what features in particular would prove useful, because I have been tossing around ideas for stripping down the software into modules, some of which might not be a huge anti-cheat taboo.

You are not coming across as an ass at all. Honestly, I am mainly using Special K for the same things in all applications which is far from using its full functionality but it is the only tool combining these things.

I love knowing the time and the frame rate in an overlay. I am using the frame limitation so that some applications are not running with 5 times my refresh rate and only let my video card go berserk. I also love the steam achievement view. Well, it is not helpful in Dota, but in other games. And, most importantly it helps to enforce borderless window in games which do not provide this option. And in a few games I “fix” the input or “mute while in background” behavior.

I know it is a very powerful tool, but for me, it mainly is a “small toolbox of convenience features”.

I just had an interesting find, which might be related to this topic. I just bought the game “Everything” which launches normally, but then gets stuck at the “synchronizing achievements” window it shows up. This seems related to the issue in Dota two as both games get stuck while communicating something with steam. I tried the compatibility settings as well without success. Didn’t check out the old version though, as I just switched to close the application whenever I launch Dota 2.

I just wanted to let you know that this might affect a few more games than just Dota 2.

From what I can tell, the game doesn’t even use the SteamAPI before it hits the “Syncronizing Achievements” screen. At that point the SteamAPI kicks in as is shown by the Special K overlay (the SteamAPI frame counter starts moving and Special K starts fetching achievements).

Dota 2 Bad Starting Item Builds

Dota 2 Bad Starting Item Builds by amikell1

Offlane Sniper

Doesn’t seem that bad actually compared to most of the other builds, but it is still pretty terrible.

2 circlets are pointless unless you want 2 wraith bands for some reason. A lot of players seem to love RoA so 1 will do and you will eventually build into your RoA from it while gaining some nice stats.

As an offlaner it is important to have ample regen. I’m no offlane Sniper expert but lets assume that Sniper will be taking some damage.

A great way to fix this build would be to replace a circlet with a healing salve, providing a lot of good regen for your laning. +2 to all attributes seems nice, but this is an item that you will probably be selling to clear slots and regen will be better for your lane.

Can you guess how this lane turned out for Sniper? He died numerous times to the enemy. Perhaps if he had more regen he could have played as greedily as he did.

Support Sand King

Sand King has decided to pick up wards! Kudos to him! However he will soon find that he has run out of regen if he decides to help bot lane at all. Now people somewhat higher level know that Sand King should probably be stacking camps and farming them with level 3 Sandstorm or stacking simply for his Batrider but this will not be the case.

Our SK will be pulling for bot lane! What a player! This also means that his gauntlets of strength are quite useless! This player probably should have considered a clarity or 2 perhaps, a salve, or maybe even… gasp… smoke of deceit!

As a support there are generally better items to build besides stats with your starting gold. However, the next 2 builds you are about to see make Sand King look like a Dota 2 god.

Safelane Lina Support/Carry?

(Our next 2 heroes seem to have been fighting over last hits bottom in some sort of trilane with Sand King pulling and ganking occasionally.)

Oh boots! How lovely they are! Not as a first item!

There are a few situations where boots first is pretty viable. Crystal Maiden and Sand King can both get boots as they need to get in range for their disables quickly. There is also an interesting boots first meta in the OD vs Razor matchup mid bla bla bla. Dota 2 lina build items for razor Or if you are a solo safelaner expecting an enemy trilane and you need to be able to get out of range of CC FAST.

However if you plan on farming bottom these are generally not the best idea. Dota 2 lina build items for razor 450 gold is a pretty big investment. Then there are the mantles… dear god the mantles… similar to the Sniper situation you do not need 2 of these items. 2 null talismans is not something you should be aiming for. I’ll get back to choosing something else in a bit – because here is the kicker. For our total regen our Lina has decided to purchase: 1 clarity.

When you head to lane you need to have SOME regen. Plan accordingly! Are you going to be taking damage in your lane? 95% time this is a definite yes! Harass and maybe if you tank some creeps you will need to regen back up. This clarity will do nothing for your HP pool.

How to fix it Mr. Reddit genius? Well if you haven’t noticed already this is random gold. Lina could have easily bought the courier for our team for starters. The item build itself could be changed for something like: x3 branches, x1 tangoes, x1 circlet/mantle if you really wanted stats for some reason, x? clarities.

There will probably be some debate (flame) over the exact item build on Reddit, this is not the point. There are a lot of better ways to spend your starting money.

Quick note on branches for those who are not learned in the ways of the GG branch: Branches are one of the most cost effective items in the game. For 50 gold you get: (1 point to all attributes from branch)

Every point in strength increases maximum health by 19.
Every point in strength increases health regeneration by 0.03 HP per second.
Every 7 points in agility increases a Hero’s armor by 1.
Every point in agility increases a Hero’s attack speed by 1.
Every point in intelligence increases a Hero’s maximum Mana by 13.
Every point in intelligence increases a Hero’s mana regeneration by 0.04 mana per second.

You will also gain 1 damage per branch as you will be placing a point into your primary attribute.

You can ALSO (but wait – there’s more!) build them into a magic wand. An amazing early game item that can save you in a pinch as well!

Where is the next entry? Mirana!

Safelane Mirana Support/Carry?

No words really. RoA rush? Mirana will likely cast a few spells while struggling for last hits with Lina, although I’m not quite sure who has the shittier animation, she does have less damage.

This build will do pretty much nothing for you.

I could only see it working if you got your team to pool for you and you had some regen – but dividing up this large item into maybe just taking the circlet to afford regen would be better.

Try to get your standard regen and a couple of branches.

This wraps up my little imgur guide of how to improve your poor starting builds… a rampant disease in low level games. Everything is up for debate of course, but at the very least educate yourself about the proper items and ask questions!

Higher-level players: Pleases do not tell low level players to head to lane with a null talisman and pooled regen… the stats from a full circlet item mean very little to people last hitting in this bracket and are better off getting the cost effective items and regen. If you want to nitpick my suggestions for the different heroes thats fine. If someone asks you a question be polite about the way you handle it, its hard for people to admit they don’t understand something.

Thanks guys, hopefully some people realized their mistakes!

A lot or a little?

The parents’ gu >

The game’s structure encourages communication and teamwork between players.

The game features a large cast of eclectic characters to play, each with its own unique play style and lore. But in terms of gameplay, there’s no sort of character development, and concepts like “good” and “evil” don’t come into play when teaming up for matches.

While the gameplay is essentially point and click, there are a lot of intricacies involved in both character development and tactical gameplay. The game doesn’t just rely on forethought and planning, but also adjusting strategies on the fly to take advantage of a teammate’s developed strength or an enemy’s sudden weakness.

There’s a fair amount of violence in each match, with players and other characters fighting against each other using fantasy weapons and magical spells. Killed players simply respawn after a short time at their team’s base, while other defeated creatures simply fade from the battlefield with minimal bloodshed.

Some characters, particularly female ones, are shown in skimpy or non-existent clothing, though the game’s scale keeps most details from being noticeable outside of character portraits.

There’s no profanity in the game’s dialogue, but the online team-based nature of the game requires regular communication with other real-world players. This could expose younger players to profanity and offensive comments during online chats.

The game is free-to-play, and unlike other games in the genre, all heroes are available to play from the onset. Players can purchase cosmetic skins for the characters they like by the in-game shop.

Some characters are shown smoking pipes and drinking various concoctions.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Dota 2 (or Defense of the Ancients 2) is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, available for download on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux-based computers. Players compete against each other in 5v5 fantasy combat to destroy the opposing side’s base while defending their own from attack. Violence is a steady occurrence, with characters fighting each other with a mix of fantasy weapons and magical abilities. While there’s lots of combat, there’s little graphic violence or blood. The game’s free-to-play, with its full roster of more than one hundred characters available to play from the onset, though players can spend money in-game to gain access to unique cosmetic skins and other add-ons. Parents should also be aware that, due to the game’s online and competitive nature, younger players could be exposed to offensive comments and profanity via in-game chat with other players.

Great game for my k >Better than first person shooters and is just as fun for my kids to teach me. Not too toxic as you can just mute the voice chat.

good but violent

What’s it about?

The fantasy battle for dominance continues in DOTA 2, the free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena where two teams of five face off against each other and the environment for control of the landscape. With more than one hundred different characters to choose from, each with its own unique set of abilities and specific role to play, you must work together with your patchwork team of other heroes and develop key strategies in real-time. Your objective? To push forward and take control of your opponents’ “Ancient,” a base of operation and the source of immense magical power. Of course, your opponents have the same idea. Dota 2 review nlop It’s a constant balance of offense and defense, of attacks and counter attacks, testing team strategy and skill in the heat of epic fantasy battle. Whose team will reign supreme and command the Ancients?

Is it any good?

There are all kinds of competitive online games on the market, but one of the biggest genres is the multiplayer online battle arena, or MOBA, style. The first Dota (which stands for “Defense of the Ancients”) originally began as a mod for Blizzard’s WarCraft III and was one of major pioneers for the genre, but Dota 2 ditched the mod route in favor of a standalone game built from the ground up, improving on everything that came before. The result wound up being a highly polished, intricate strategy game that didn’t just cement the foundation of the MOBA genre, but also managed to stand the test of time and continue to thrive even years after its release. While Dota 2 might have helped lay to groundwork for MOBA games, there’s a lot in the game that makes it stand out from the crowd. It’s got a massive roster of characters to choose from, over one hundred in total, and yet each one still manages to feel distinct from the others in ability, function, and presentation. Best of all, there’s no restriction on who to play. Right from the start, all the heroes are unlocked, opening up a veritable buffet of options to play with.

The only real issue with the game is that it’s difficult to jump into as a newcomer, due to the established community. While it’s not nearly as toxic as some online games, there still seems to be an assumption that players have a certain level of experience already. And in the heat of a match, some players will occasionally lose their cool. Still, players can bypass this by grabbing some friends and learning the intricacies of the game playing against A. I. controlled bots and by trying out heroes in a testbed “demo” mode. It takes some time and practice to really understand the ins and outs of Dota 2, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the MOBA genre, but it’s well worth the investment. Working with a good team and finding the right mix of players makes for a great online experience and an exhilarating rush that’s hard to resist. And considering just how much players get without ever needing to spend a dime, Dota 2 makes for a near perfect way to get your feet wet before diving into the great big ocean of MOBA games out there.

Talk to your k >

Families can talk about online competition and teamwork. What are some positive ways to act and behave in online competitive matches? What are some ways that good communication can help with teamwork?

How does the free-to-play model help to draw in a larger audience for games? How do these games encourage players to spend money within the game?
