Dota Dictionary for Beginners

Dota is a complex game with a vast amount of different concepts. In fact, it is complex enough to require its own vocabulary. While most of it is already common knowledge, newer players can struggle with the understanding of the lingo. Moreover, it is also almost never explained during tournament streams.

For newer players, this article might be helpful with jump-starting their process of getting acquainted with the game. For others, it’s a reminder that all of us were new to Dota at some point, and it is no easy task to learn the game. There was a time when none of us had even the slightest idea of what these concepts mean.

Pulling — the process of aggroing the neutral camp and “pulling” them into a friendly or enemy creepwave. Mainly done for controlling the lane equilibrium, but can also be used as an aid for farming.

Lane Equilibrium — a place on the lane where creeps from each side meet. A very important concept, since farming closer to your tower puts you in a much safer space. Controlling the lane equilibrium through pulls is a very important game mechanic.

Stacking — the process of aggroing the neutral camp and moving it away shortly before the respawn time. If done properly, results in two (or more) sets of neutral creeps occupying the same camp, which can facilitate the farm or ensure a more successful pull.

Zoning — act of applying pressure to the enemy offlaner, typically by a support, to prevent him from getting experience and gold in the lane and tampering with the farm of the carry.

Roaming — frequent movement from one lane to another for the purposes of ganking or support. Usually associated with supports in the early game, but is not restricted to them. More on the topic can be found here.

Playmaking — initiation of offensive plays. Hence, playmaking heroes are frequently initiators and playmaking players are the players who excel in this role.

Space creation — act of wasting enemy time, frequently associated with self-sacrifice, for the purpose of gaining advantage in the other areas of the map. Advantages usually include extra safe farm for the carry or an objective for the team.

Farming Pattern — an efficient movement pattern between one or two lanes and the jungle which typically aims to maximize the farm of the hero.

Burst Damage — high amount of damage dealt in a very short time. While typically associated with nukes, burst damage can also come from strong critical strike abilities (e. g. Phantom Assassin) or very high attack damage (e. g. Sven).

Map control — accessibility and safety of the map’s resources. Typically, areas around the towers are assumed to be under the control of the team, since the towers can be used as points of teleport and provide some vision. Gaining map control, therefore, is usually associated with taking the objectives from the enemy or warding. For more on vision-based map control, you can refer to our previous blog post.

Positions 1-5 — farm priority positions, with 1 being the highest and 5 being the lowest. Positions 1-3 are usually core heroes of the team, with 4 and 5 being supports. Depending on how starved the supports are, commentators often jokingly refer to them as position 6—8 supports.

Win condition — a specific scenario, under which the team can win the game. While usually ample at the beginning of the match, these scenarios tend to shrink in quantity by the mid-game, especially for the losing team. More on the topic can be found in our “dealing with…” series.

Disjoint — act of evading the enemy spell or auto-attack projectile by using mobility (e. g. Blink), invisibility or temporary invulnerability (e. g. Manta Style) abilities.

Fade Time — a short delay between the use of an invisibility ability and the invisibility being applied. Most invisibility abilities, such as Shadow Walk or Glimmer Cape, have fade time, however, some spells, such as Ghost Walk do not, hence the invisibility is applied instantly.

Dispel — removal of status effects (buffs and debuffs) from an ally or an enemy. Only strong dispels can remove hard disables, such as stuns. There are currently only three sources of strong dispels which can be used on allies: Aphotic Shield, Press The Attack and False Promise. A more detailed overview of the concept can be found in our previous blog post

Interrupt — an ability, that can prevent the enemy from using channeling spells. Includes stuns, mini-stuns, silences, hexes etc. Note, that not all abilities with forced movement will interrupt channeling abilities. Force Staff, Deafening Blast, Flamebreak and many other will allow the enemy to keep channeling, while Vacuum or Nether Swap will not.

Reliable Gold — gold from kills, assists, objectives (including Roshan), couriers and Hand of Midas. Reliable gold is not lost on death, and is only spent during purchases when the unreliable gold pool is depleted.

Effective HP — HP of a target, taking into account its armor.

Pseudo random — distribution used by most random-based abilities in Dota. Steam dota 2 russian dictionary in english Each hit without random-based ability proc will increase the chances of the proc, however once the effect works, the chance is reset to below the stated value. The system is in place to prevent long chains of successful or unsuccessful attacks with or without proc.

Closing thoughts

We understand that many of you will not find a lot of new information in this post. However, Dota is a game that constantly attracts new players and it is our duty to make the newcomers feel comfortable.

Understanding the basic concepts of the game and its own language is a first step towards better in-game communication, and communication is often the lacking element in all of our games.

Dendi

Danil “Dendi” Ishutin (born December 30, 1989) is a Ukrainian professional Dota 2 and former DotA player. Well known for his solo mid skills, he is regarded as one of the most creative players in the scene today, and is renowned for his unorthodox play style and unconventional skill and item builds. He currently plays for The Pango.

Biography [ edit ]

Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Dendi got an early start with competitive gaming in net cafes when his elder brother married, moved out and took the family’s PC with him. Dabbling with Counter-Strike first, he soon found Warcraft 3 where he played in local tournaments and built a love for the competition and a thirst to be the best. Though he was quite successful in Warcraft 3 and even won a few local championships in Lviv, he knew he had found his calling when he stumbled upon DotA. He picked up the game quickly and played it almost exclusively over the next few months.

Beginning with learning only supports, he practiced heavily and was quickly vouched to the IHCS1 league and soon created his own team for tournaments in Lviv. After he led his team to a championship in Kiev, he was drafted by a team called “Wolker. Gaming” and began his professional career at 17.

DotA [ edit ]

Dendi started playing professionally with WG in 2006. [1] He was a part of the Ukrainian squad that finished third in MYM Prime Nations the same year. Only a few months later WG made it to the grand final of one of the most prestigious tournaments at the time; MYM Prime Defending. [2] When Kingsurf. international merged with WG the next year he became a full-time member of Ks. int. [1] In late 2008 he joined DTS, only to return to Ks. int in March 2009. [3] Three months later though, Dendi returned to DTS. [4] The team would end up finishing 2nd at ESWC 2010. At the end of 2010, Dendi and DTS finished 3rd at the prestigious WDC 2010. [5] Dendi joined Natus Vincere at the end of 2010. [6]

Dota 2 [ edit ]

Dendi started his Dota 2 career with Na’Vi, who quickly established themselves as one of the best teams in the world by winning The International 2011. Na’Vi continued to dominate and won many tournaments in the years 2011, 2012 and 2013. Dendi was the center of Na’Vi’s consistent stable and skilled rosters, with his performance greatly contributing to their success.

The Natus Vincere Dota 2 team achieved significant success with Dendi as their midlaner during the first few years of the game; they finished as the runners-up for both The International 2012 and The International 2013, losing out to Invictus Gaming and Alliance, respectively. 2013 would mark the last year of Na’Vi and Dendi’s dominance in the Dota 2 scene, as they only recorded two LAN victories since January 2014. The International 2014 saw Na’Vi and Dendi finishing the tournament outside of the top 2 for the first time and the following two Internationals, TI 5 and TI 6, they would finish in last place. The results would deteriorate further, as they would fail to even qualify for The International 2017, they failed to advance out of the group stage of the regional qualifiers. This marked the first year of The International tournaments without Dendi attending as a player. The 2017/18 season started of promising for Dendi and Na’Vi, who dominated the CIS scene in the early months, crowning their improving results with their second LAN victory since 2014. However, the second half of the season saw the roster break apart and finally the team would fail to even reach the regional qualifiers for The International 2018, after losing in the open qualifier.

Four years of roster instability and poor results finally took their toll on the reputation of the Na’Vi organization and on Dendi’s status as a legendary player and a top tier midlaner. After 8 years playing mid on Na’Vi, Dendi was finally removed from the active roster in September 2018. However, Dendi vowed to continue playing professionally. After a brief stint on Tigers, Dendi joined The Pango.

Harry Potter Dota: The Mirror of atoD

Previous Chapters:

The year was nearly over. Harry’s Dota classes were progressing smoothly, save for recipes with 2GD who seemed to hate him more each lesson. Harry saw Ron and Hermione daily, rarely staying in SlytheriNA’s dungeon common room.

After his performance in the juking lesson, Harry had been made an official alternate for SlytheriNA’s B-team, but he had yet to see any match play, as Demon seemed always to fill any empty slot that appeared on the team. Harry’s preferred position was solo mid, of course, the same as Malfho.

This year’s Fogwards Dota House Cup was decided early, with 中国PUFF’s A and B teams taking first and second. SlytheriNA’s first team finished third, while SlytheriNA’s second team finished last due to Demon throwing away a critical match, much to Harry’s satisfaction.

Harry’s celebrity had not diminished throughout the year, as his tale of mysteriously defeating the famously fatal Pudge level in his first juking lesson had spread around the school. To avoid the stares and judgment of his fellow students, Harry rarely walked the halls during the day. Instead, he preferred to explore after curfew, using his father’s amulet to dodge janitor Flax’s nightly patrols with ease, as the man never ever thought to carry a set of sentry wards.

The past few nights Harry just couldn’t fall asleep. He even resorted to reading “The Agricultural Revolution: A History of 中国PUFF” and while he was now somewhat of an expert in Chinese Dota, he was no closer to a good night’s rest.

Harry tucked his amulet into his pocket, walked out of his room, past the SlytheriNA common room doors and into the cold, dark Fogwards hallway. Where should he go? He had the whole school to choose from.

Suddenly, he felt his scar burn, and he knew where to go.

Fogwards Library, Restricted Section

The library was pitch-black and very eerie. Harry wished he had brought some observer wards, but stopped himself before casting the familiar chat wheel “WE NEED WARDS” indicator spell. He silently cursed himself for not forcing Hermione to buy them yesterday.

The Restricted Section was right at the back of the library. Normally, a greater hawk alerted Finol of any students entering the section, but Harry’s amulet gained him access.

He moved deeper into the section, and once he was in the clear, deactivated his amulet and cast an illusory orb down the stacks. It lit up the titles on either side as it drifted.

Mysteries of the Forests of Caldavar
The Norse Pantheon
Navigating Blackheart’s Bay
Skills of Catwoman

The list went on, and Harry recognized none of it.

Further down the shelf there was a burned book with a half-title Shapers of Da-, its peeling, faded letters unreadable. Harry noticed one stack of books at the very end. His scar burned again as he fixated on it, the voice in his head driving him further toward them.

He pulled a book off the shelf, called The Summoner’s Rift. It had a dark stain on it that looked horribly like blood. Maybe he was imagining it, maybe not, but he thought a faint whispering was coming from the books, as though they knew someone was there who shouldn’t be.

He opened the book and began to read.

Harry found himself standing in a darkened hallway with no recollection of what he had been doing the past few hours. How did he get here?

A noise shocked him out of his trance.

“You asked me to come directly to you, Professor, if anyone was wandering about at night.” said an exasperated Pyrion Flax. He was walking with 2GD, and this time they had dust. “I think somebody’s been in the library’s Restricted Section.”

Harry had nowhere to run. In just a few moments they were going to find him…

Suddenly, a door appeared to his left, a door Harry had never seen before. Throwing caution to the wind, Harry opened it, walked through, and shut the door behind him.

The Lobby of Requirement

It looked like a normal private lobby, the ones used by the House Dota teams to practice against each other. Harry could change it into a drafting room and eventually into a Dota map if he wished. But propped against the wall facing him was something that didn’t look as if it belonged here.

It was a magnificent mirror, as high as the ceiling, with an ornate gold frame, standing on two clawed feet. There was an inscription carved around the top: eM deeF.

Harry realized quickly that even an idiot would recognize this inscription was “Feed Me” backwards. Feed the mirror? Feed it what?

He looked at his reflection. The image staring back at him was foggy, but Harry could make out that he was wearing some sort of uniform that wasn’t SlytheriNA. A woman was standing right behind his reflection, smiling at him and waving.

Harry turned around, but he was still alone. She existed only in the mirror. She was a pretty woman, dark hair and eyes…

Her eyes are just like mine, Harry thought.

She was crying and smiling. There was a tall, thin, blond-haired man standing next to him, smiling proudly as well.

“Mom?” Harry whispered. “Dad?”

Fogwards Dining Hall

“The mirror showed me my parents,” Harry described his discovery of the special private lobby and its mirror to Ron and Hermione, carefully omitting his excursion into the Library’s Restricted Section.

“Your parents are dead, Harry” Hermione said with a sympathetic face. “Are you sure you weren’t dreaming?”

“Way to be a downer Hermione,” said Ron. “He knows they’re dead.”

“It’s not every day someone is killed by a Reaper’s Scythe, let alone two people,” Hermione remarked. “They’re not coming back, a magic mirror won’t change that.”

“Maelk died twenty times in a match once and still came back…” Ron scowled. “It was legendary!”

Harry said nothing as his friends argued. He had seen his parents. They were in the mirror. If he could only find a way to get to the room again.

“If you two don’t believe me about the Lobby, I’ll show you,” Harry said. “Let’s go.”

“What are you guys talking about?” Jacky Mao approached. Another two GяўffiйdФr students were with him. “Oh, this is Shane and Henry.”

“Nice to meet both of you, we were just going…” Harry didn’t want anyone to follow them.

“To the special private lobby with the mirror right?” Jacky spoke of it like it was common knowledge.

“You’ve been there too!?” Ron looked envious.

“Of course, Omar showed me during EEL, he knows all about private lobbies,” said Jacky matter-of-factly. “You just need to think of the special lobby, and it’ll be there.”

As if on cue, a door appeared next to them. They all walked in, except for Hermione, who refused to break any rules, even imaginary ones.

The room was the same, and the mirror was right where Harry remembered.

“See? My parents are right there.”

“I don’t see anything but you, Harry.” Ron said. “But I do see myself holding a Hand of Midas…”

“I have hair?” Shane said, looking into the mirror. “Whoa. Atod dota 2 ”

“I just see a grizzly bear,” said Henry. “A tall girl is riding on my back…”

“I’m holding four Aegises of Champions,” said Jacky. “I’m also an anime character.”

“The Aegis of Champions?” asked Harry. “What’s that?”

Shane and Henry ignored him, still staring into the mirror.

“What?” Harry said. “Is it the trophy for the House Cup? Maybe I’ll win it next year.”

Ron was able to tear himself away from his reflection to explain.

“There’s no House Cup next year Harry — next year is The International.”

With their fourth place finish, MVP Phoenix had their best placement in a premier tournament since TI5. It’s hard to imagine that at one point the community and professional players said that SEA shouldn’t have its own region for qualifiers, because they had no teams worth competing against.

The joke about an inevitable wave of Korean prodigies ready to take over Dota is now old, but it might not happen in the way we think. There’s a severe lack of young SEA and Korean talent, when compared to the pool of players that US, EU, and China can cull from. It won’t be anytime soon that we’ll see a boom of competitive Korean teams, but for now we have teams like MVP. Phoenix and Fnatic , who improve event after event.

With the Major done, all eyes are pointed towards the next main event: the post-tournament drama, where teams kick players, acquire ones, shuffling and re-arming their rosters for the next Dota Major in Manila. Shanghai major dota 2 team Sometimes these new teams look nothing like their old, with only one or two remaining players. Chinese teams may benefit from something new to jumpstart themselves after their lackluster performance at the major. But other teams may benefit to maintain their roster, valuing stability, trust, and a commitment to improve. There are plenty of teams throughout this tournament who, despite not winning it all, can still be happy with their results.

It ended with a Liquid. w33 shackleshot on Team Liquid ’s highground, roping two heroes at such a distance that the observer had to recenter the camera to see who was caught, but the game was perhaps sealed long before that. It could’ve been when Team Secret held a 15k gold lead at 20 minutes, a 9-1 kill lead at 5 minutes, or at the start of the game, where panel analysts and casters declared that it was the biggest outdraft of the finals.

The event ended in a letdown with that loss, only because it followed several thrilling games, including a signature performance by w33ha on Invoker in game 3. To Liquid’s credit, the one win they pulled off against Secret was a brilliant display of execution and maneuvering.

Liquid started off strong with some early towers off their push lineup of Beastmaster, Lycan, and Invoker. However, Secret managed to stabilize for a moment, threatening to take over with a draft better suited for team fight and late game. Liquid managed to avoid a full confrontation, dividing up Team Secret around the map, picking them off, and split pushing. In one instance, Mindcontrol was pushing on his own with Beastmaster while the rest of his team occupied Team Secret at the Roshan pit. Amidst the confusion, Puppey and Pieliedie rotated to defend their tower. Mindcontrol picked off Puppey, finished Pieliedie with a Roar and a timely Sunstrike from Fata, and TP’d out between Secret’s cooldowns.

Team Secret faced stiff competition while sweeping through the upper bracket of the main event, defeating previous Major Champions, OG (2:1), longtime rivals, EG (2:1), and Team Liquid, twice (2:0 and 3:1). They will returning home with the title and the 1st place prize of 1.1 million dollars.

If you don’t play dota2 and don’t know what flamesalt ingots are and you never queued for the year beast even, close this tab and get out, i don’t feel like explaining even half of it

And yes this is mostly a rant, i got to farm around 700ish ingots in the week, that aparently is a nice number, however the gold you receive from ingots is just a one time run thing, once you spend it, they are gone, you got 6 divine rapiers because yolo? now you don’t have any gold for your next try

Fortunately i was not one of those people (because i tried practice mode first)

But many, many people did

And if you soloq, you are going to get 1-4 people with no gold to buy items and do nothing and die in literally 1-2 hits, and if you also have no gold, well you are pretty much ****ed

On the nice side, i use Skeleton King a lot in normal dota and i got a rare crown from the lvl6 gift so why
not try him?

First try, wasted 75% of the ingots i had, Rank C

Apparently his ult was bugged (if you die with it it doesn’t revive you) his q did no damage and neither stunned the thing but even then his w and e worked perfectly

Apparently too well

On second try i had this ursa instalocker telling me to pick SK and max w and e and dump everything in stats, so i did, i had just just enough gold get crimson guard and armlet

And what a surprise, we both were the only two guys with gold to buy anything

So 3 people did absolutely nothing but distract the beast, lowering our dps, because we were sustaining trough everything that thing threw at us, in fact we let them die and we stopped reviving them 4 mins in

And even then, we got rank C again

I played some normal dota matches to get enough ingots for a armlet and vanguard

4 people had no items

o well time to google some builds/strategies to solo it and get a nice rank for tokens.

So we either had 2 options, yolo it when the limited 24h gamemode came out and fail miserably because we don’t know what to do
Or wait a bit and other people will make us fail miserably because nobody has any inglots anymore

I was lucky and got 800 jade tokens from abusing a bug i don’t even knew it existed

And many people wasted 8 days worth of playtime for nothing

TLDR: The gamemode is stupid and flawed and apparently is made that way to make you buy boosts, if you have any ingots left to spend wait for the beast to comeback in some days when valve fixes all the bugs in this thing,
And:
DO NOT QUEUE NOW NOBODY HAS ANY GOLD ANYMORE AND THEY WILL RUIN YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING AND WASTE YOUR INGOTS

Why don’t you just 5-stack with people who know what they’re doing?

It’s really pathetic, a pay to win gamemode (YEAH I KNOW THE GAME IS ****ING FREE I KNOW) that you need a 5 stack to do well in a one trick pony gamemode you farmed for during the entire week, and what valve does? Oh, let’s patch every single “exploit” so it’s stupidly harder to get anything better than Rank F in soloq.

It could be a cool raidboss battle, but why it needs to be so hard except for people who play this game 24/7?

Plus, i just have one friend that plays dota2 half frequently, and i haven’t seen him in the entire day

-5 man stack with your friends.
-if you don’t 5 man stack you are stuck with people who does no item grind
-you get 120 ingots every time you play a game
-you get 250 jade token which is a free cosmetic every time you get 100k+ damage. No ingot needed
-at least there’s an event in Dota2

If you don’t play dota2 and don’t know what flamesalt ingots are and you never queued for the year beast even, close this tab and get out, i don’t feel like explaining even half of it

Dota 2 announced heroes of newerth

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is the first of the two MOBA games that originated from the Defense of the Ancients WC3 custom map. After Dota 2 launched, there was a fair bit of rivalry between the two supporting communities, although both games were extremely well received by the pro and casual players.

HoN was launched by S2 Games as a standalone title in May 2010. In July 2011 it became free to play, just as Dota 2 was about to make a big boom with his first The International in August of the same year. Despite the big prize pool and the completely free to play features of Dota 2, HoN continued to exist, surrounded by a devoted community. In May 2015 Garena purchased HoN from S2 Games and passed the development to Frostburn Studios.

Yesterday, the HoN developers announced what will be the last gameplay update for Heroes of the Newerth. Version 4.7.3 will be deployed on 26th of February 2019 and it’s planned to be “the final patch that contains major content and major changes.” According to the developer team, future patches will be delivered only if they are necessary deemed and it will mainly contain only bugs fixes and/or balance changes.

HoN brought to Dota 2 some of the greatest players and personalities. Perhaps the most iconic ones are Johan “N0tail” Sundstein, Tal “Fly” Aizik, Kalle “Trixi” Saarinen and Adrian “Era” Kryeziu who came together with Fnatic from HoN to Dota 2, back in 2012. Around the TI3 era, when the four would participate at their first ever The international, the Dota 2 community was still harsh on them often calling the Fnatic lineup “HoN trash.” A few years later, Notail became a TI champion and together with Fly, he built OG, one of the most beloved teams worldwide. Kyle Freedman and his brother Zakari “Zfreek” Freedman are also two of the most successful HoN players who embraced a Dota 2 career. Much like N0tail, Fly, Era, and Trixi, the two came to Dota 2 two with most of their HoN team members, however, they did it on the second half of 2014. Ludwig “zai” Wåhlberg made his great debut as a pro player in HoN. In 2012 he became the youngest player to win a DreamHack HoN championship at the age of 14. A year later Zai had also switched to Dota 2.

More recently, one of the greatest HoN casters joined the Dota 2 world as well, and despite his enormous popularity in HoN, where he also has his own announcer pack, Nick “BreakyCPK” Caras has taken baby steps and works on grinding his way into the top tier Dota 2 casters. Upon the announcement of the last HoN patch, Breaky held an AMA session over Reddit, which can be found here.

With the curtain going down for HoN, some of the Dota 2 community members are wondering if any of the heroes which have no correspondent in Valve’s game will ever make the transition as well. Even some of the players are looking forward to that possibility.

with HoN dying, hope valve buys the heroes so when they’re added I’m already practiced

Only time will tell if HoN will get to live in our memories through some possible heroes transferred to Dota 2. In any case, those who played both HoN and Dota 2 will never forget where and how everything started.

Dota 2: Why and How’s of Creep Blocking

Nkhara

Thu 18th Apr 2013 – 6:12pm

Dota 2 is one of the Action RTS games with the mechanic of creep blocking. Creep blocking is when a player walks in front of his creep wave causing them to stop moving periodically and thus forcing the wave to meet the opposing team’s wave later than initially intended.

How important is creep blocking?

I think it is the kind of mechanic where it’s so easy to learn that it is important for every player to know how to properly use it. This guide is dedicated for mostly new players to better understand creep blocking and what it does to creep equilibrium as well as what advantages or disadvantages it could serve you.

Ok so let’s start slow – there are three lanes in the game and thus three lanes where you could creep block. Creep blocking is mostly done at the first creep spawn at 0:00 on the in game timer. The reason is because depending on how you block your creeps could change the future creep equilibrium of the lane to your advantage. This can still be done later as well but it is arguably most effective at the start of the game.

Let’s start in the middle lane because I could talk about the safe lane and the long lane simultaneously a little later in the article. It is important to talk about how the middle lane is structured. The map has two small ramps, one on the radiant side and one on the dire side, and both being uphill to the river. Now, in this middle lane you arguably want the enemy creeps to be fighting your creeps just below your ramp. This puts you in a position where you are fogged from your enemy, meaning he cannot see you because he has no high ground vision.

From here you can do many things that your opponent cannot, such as if you chose to harass your opponent you will have the advantage because he can not see you coming at him yet you can see his movements. On top of that, unless he has vision of you then the creeps will not come up and attack you after you have attacked him. Unless he has amazing reaction time along with not having his basic attack on cooldown you should be able to get free hits off on your opponent.

Attacking from low ground to high ground Ranged Heroes have a miss chance and so statistically the hero with high ground should have the advantage in out last hitting. The last key thing from having this position is that QOP is closer to her tower and safer from ganks. If you look at where Pudge is you can see that he is far more extended from his side as opposed to QOP, thus very susceptible to smoke ganks early on.

Quite often good support players will smoke gank mid for first blood if they notice or predict that you will be out of position like that. A good example of this is in the picture below, you can see that not only does the Pudge not have vision of the QOP right in front of him where the fog is but also if a gank came from above the ramp behind him there is no possible way he could survive.

So how do we get you into this advantageous position? This part is a little weird and actually takes some prediction. So obviously if neither side creep blocks the waves will meet right in the middle of the river. I’m going to write out the ways you could creep block in order to get you into this position.

So generally in lower level pubs just a little bit of creep blocking should be enough to put you into that position. This is because for still learning players many of them either struggle with creep blocking and fail or they just don’t do it at all. Unfortunately In the higher level play your opponents will certainly know about creep blocking and should at least be decent at it. At that point you must creep block somewhere between a decent amount and a lot, but careful!

Creep blocking too much will put your enemy creep waves at your tower where they will die very quickly, making them hard to last hit and also making your lane pushed after the first wave dies. But if you creep block too little than if your opponent is good they will creep block a little more and then they will be in the advantageous position. So in order to get it just right it will take a fair amount of good judgement and prediction. Good to note though, that under creep blocking is probably the safer bet rather than over creep blocking when you don’t know your opponent.

So next we talk about the safe lane and long lane. Talking long lane, you generally are playing in a defensive position, especially if you are a solo offlaner. As a solo offlaner you are just getting whatever exp. This means that if your oppo and last hits you can without dyingnents lose control of their creep equilibrium and the lane gets pushed then you are going to have the time of your life. This is why I would recommend not creep blocking in the offlane/long lane if you are solo. It is much better to just see if your opponents will make some sort of mistake and accidentally overly creep block and push their own lane.

However if you are either dual laning or tri-laning your long lane, it could actually prove beneficial to creep block. Depending on what you are up against, you might be able to actually harass and even kill the enemy carry. Majority of carries really don’t have too much lane presence, that is why teams run at least two supports so that the carry can have some sort of hope in farming his lane safely. The reason you want to creep block is because you want to have their carry as far away from his lane tower as possible so that he will not be able to hide under it if you do decide to engage.

You can see from the picture above, the trilane creep blocked a lot forcing their carry to be very far from his tower. Even if the Luna had creep blocked the trilane did it to an extreme point where most likely the Luna would still have been out of position.

So from here talking about how to creep block the safe lane is relatively simpler, since we already had the long lane point of view. So basically if you think you will be against an offlane soloer you want to not creep block your lane because the creeps will end up in a perfect farming position for your carry right under his tower.

From there on make sure you keep the offlane solo away from exp via harassment by your supports and try to maintain a good creep equilibrium. If you think you will be against some sort of offensive dual or trilane than it really is a hard decision to make, if they don’t creep block and you think they will and creep block too much then you could end up with their creep wave being attacked by your tower and a very underfarmed carry. The safest bet would be just creep block your creeps to a very minimum amount just incase they did creep block so you’re still ok and if they didn’t then you should still be fine.

I hope this guide will help you guys understand creep blocking a little better from here on out!
