Mr. Valve

Mr. Valve, also known as The Valve Guy, is the nickname used for the two mascots used by Valve for the introductory logos seen at the start of their games, and previously on their official website.

Overview

Origins

Valve’s Ray Ueno stated he worked with Gabe Newell and their colleagues to develop the “guy in the logo” when they decided to call the company “Valve” around 1995-1996, and needed to develop the visual brand vocabulary to go along with it.

Back then, the casting agencies Valve was using to find models for the Valve Guy only proposed attractive models, while they were searching for “heavy-set”, “normal” ones. They then asked their agencies to walk the streets of Seattle and find more interesting people. In Seattle’s Broadway district, they took many Polaro >[1]

The two comprised the “Open your mind. Open your eyes.” concept for Valve’s initial brand, respectively for the heavily-built and goatee men. As of today, the >[1]

The first Mr. Valve to be used was the thin man with a goatee. He originally appeared as a model in a demonstration map created by Valve to showcase the GoldSrc engine abilities, which was also an early idea for an introductory logo for their games. The map was designed by Greg Coomer, the models were designed by Steve Theodore, and Doug Wood provided the animations.

During the demonstration set in some sort of forge/workshop, the man appears as bald, bare-chested and wearing trousers, and is implanting a valve into the right side of his forehead with a machine, showcasing the “Open your mind” slogan eventually used for the heavily-built Valve guy.

The map used in the demonstration, dated September 9, 1998, is simply named ” valve. bsp “, and the model “mrvalve. mdl”. Only one other model is used in the map: “spiggot. mdl”, the valve itself. The model “mrvalve. mdl” can be found in the Half-Life: Day One model files; the map ” valve. bsp ” was given by Chris Bokitch to the users of the now defunct website Valve ERC. [2]

The first logo

The real-time introduction was eventually replaced with an. avi video showing a static sepia photograph of the man with a valve in his left eye, showcasing the “Open your eyes” concept. This was launched for Half-Life but is not used in the PS2 version and Steam version.

For Half-Life 2 in 2004, its color was toned down a bit, and new “trembling” effects were added to the edges of the picture. It was last used for Episode One in 2006.

In 2007, for The Orange Box, the goatee Mr. Valve was replaced by the heavy-built man, photographed with his back turned, with the valve this time in the back of the head, showcasing the “Open your mind” concept that is way more creepy.

The two “Open your eyes” and “Open your mind” montages were both made at the same time in the late nineties, but the “Open your mind” one was never used in the games until 2007 when it replaced the “Open your eyes” version. Before that, it was used only on Valve’s official website from as far as early 1998, [3] first alone, then changing to the “Open your eyes” version then back to itself as an animated gif (two. jpgs at first) from early 1999, [4] as itself again when the website was revamped late 2005, [5] then removed when the website was revamped again in 2010. The valve detail of the picture is also present in the Half-Life texture files and used as the favicon for Valve’s current website.

In the May 26, 2010, update applied to Half-Life 2 and Episode One, the “Open your mind” version replaced the “Open your eyes” one, the latter now only used for the GoldSrc games.

In Dota 2, Portal 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a similar logo is used, however if you look extremely closely between the head sizes, and facial features. Naravno ne smemo zaboraviti ni ekipe kao što su aktuelni prvak OG, prošlogodišnji finalista PSG. LGD kao i Evil Geniuses koji je bio treći na 3 od 5 odigranih Majora ova sezone. Ipak čini se da ove ekipe bar na papiru imaju mnogo manje šanse za titulu od četiri glavna favorita, a naravno ne treba zaboraviti ni sve preostale učesnike među kojima se nalaze: Fnatic, Ninjas in Pyjamas, TNC Predator, Alliance, Keen Gaming, Newbee (ex-Forward Gaming), Infamous, Chaos Esports Club, Na’Vi, Royal Never Give Up i Mineski.

A comprehensive comparison of Dota 2 and League of Legends

MOBA games have been around for a long time, but Dota 2 and League of Legends are the first to regularly pull numbers like the 329,977 concurrent users on Dota 2 and the ” over 500,000 peak concurrent players every day on just the EU West” League of Legends server.

You’d think that with the sheer popularity of MOBA games, they’d be easy to break into, but that’s usually not the case. Fortunately, this guide is here to help! This article should help you understand the basic concepts that are common to both games as well as the overarching differences.

Be warned, both of these games have pretty steep learning curves, but it shouldn’t take long to grasp the basics.

Glossary

Basic Gam eplay

If you’ve ever played any sort of RTS, then the basic layout of LoL and Dota should be at least somewhat familiar. These are top-down games where you control your champion or hero alongside four other players in five-on-five fantasy action.

Left-clicking selects units while right-clicking moves your character or attacks. League of Legends uses Q, W, E and R for your main abilities with D and F reserved for summoner spells. Items are assigned to 1-6 by default. Dota 2 does things a little differently with the number keys reserved for control groups—similarly to StarCraft—and Z, X, C, V, B and N bound to your item slots. Some champions with more than four abilities also require the use of other keys like D and F.

Last hitting—delivering the killing blow to a minion—is likely the most fundamental skill you’ll have to learn to play either game. Last-hitting minions is your primary means of accruing gold. Wait until the minion gets low enough for you to kill it with a single attack before you hit it. You’ll still earn a slow trickle of gold over time, but killing a few extra minions can be the difference between buying the item that you need or missing out on XP for nothing.

LoL and Dota 2 do differ in how they reward players for killing players. In both games, killing an enemy player grants gold to everyone who participated in the kill. In League of Legends, the amount of gold a player is worth depends on how many times they’ve died without getting a kill and whether or not they’re on a killing spree. Dota 2 adds to this by punishing the dead player by throwing away some of the unreliable gold that they’ve earned. Reliable gold is awarded for kills while unreliable gold is gained over time and for killing minions.

The distinction between the two types of gold is reason enough to declare that Dota 2 is a far more punishing game. At the same time, getting kills is quite a bit more rewarding than it is in League of Legends because you gain reliable gold while causing an enemy to lose gold. Not only is it easier to make mistakes in Dota 2, but it’s also harder to come back from them.

Every single match of Dota 2 or League begins with the laning phase. This generally lasts from the time that minions spawn to anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes into the game. During this time, carry characters spend their time trying to last hit as well as possible. The goal of laning phase is to earn as much gold as possible while harassing your opponent.

Battles are more frequent and abrupt in Dota 2. Once a team commits to a fight, enemies will be stunned and spells will be unleashed. It usually only takes a second or two for the first casualty in a fight. During a game, it’s not uncommon to see first blood claimed only a few minutes in. Fights in Dota 2 are quite a bit like food fights—you look around to make sure no one’s watching, then let loose a few cups of pudding or an Arcane Bolt or two.

League of Legends is a little less chaotic. The first kill might take place 10 minutes into a match, but that isn’t to say that the game is any slower paced. You’ll be casting your spells far more often than you do in Dota 2 because of LoL’s emphasis on skillshots and low mana costs. Laning is usually a matter of last hitting while throwing out a spell or two to try and push your opponent out of lane.

The later section of both games is reserved for team fighting and coordinated pushes to try and reach the enemy base. As the end of the game approaches, teams usually start to stick together to knock down towers and eventually the base structures—the melee and ranged barracks in Dota 2 and the inhibitors in LoL which strengthens creep waves. Destroying the nexus or ancient is the only way to end the game without forcing a surrender vote.

Champions/Heroes

Although you’re given control over a single character in both Dota 2 and LoL, the two games have different ideas of what constitutes a hero or champion.

Playing dodge ball with the ground is a lot more fun than it sounds.

Champions in League of Legends are more likely to have skillshots and spells that can be spammed. As a result, LoL focuses not only on traditional, attack damage (AD) carries, but also on ability power (AP) carries. Unlike in Dota 2, you can buy items that increase the damage output of your abilities in LoL. The laning phase in League games usually involve quite a bit more ability-based harass. Poking your opponent with a skillshot or target spell is reasonable because of the low mana costs that accompany most spells. Every single champion in this game has four main, character-specific spells along with room for two summoner spells; Flash is one spell that you’ll see all the time because it lets you jump a short distance in the direction of your cursor.

The comparatively lesser emphasis on skillshots doesn’t mean that Dota 2 isn’t a skill-driven game. It makes up for it by having a diverse pool of heroes that are able to build items to satisfy different roles. Dota heroes have much more explosive power with the ability to execute combos that usually leads to battles that last only a few seconds. These powerful spells come at a cost—the mana required to cast these spells is usually high—which prevents them from being used constantly. Another distinguishing factor of Dota 2’s hero pool is the Invoker—playable proof of the wide variety of heroes available in the game. With a total of 14 abilities at his disposal, the Invoker is considered by many to be the most complex character in any MOBA game. Mixing and matching reagents to invoke new spells demonstrates just how versatile and varied Dota 2 heroes can be.

One of the things that makes it hardest for me to transition from League of Legends to Dota 2 apart from the various gameplay differences, is the map aesthetic. Sure the UI is huge and clunky compared to the scalable one in LoL but the map is really what makes it hard for me to play. I can’t read it, I can’t see where I am, everything is so flat and looks the same to me. The only way for me to know where on the map I stand is to look at that tiny little box on the minimap.

This was a problem for me when I tried to play HoN too, but HoN was a hundred times worse at this than Dota 2.

But well instead of being all talk, let me just point out examples and why I think this is happening.

If you take a look at the one on the left (LoL) and compare it to the one on the right (Dota) You can see that the camera seems to be located significantly lower in Dota 2 [dota2strategyguide. com] (compare the boxes on the minimap) from the ground, but the same from the head of the champion

As such, the map in Dota 2 is probably a lot bigger than the one in LoL so the camera has less coverage around the PC even if it’s at the same height.

Solutions:
1: Downscaling the map (Easiest way, no loss of graphical quality either)
2: Upscaling the champions and moving the camera higher (Harder since each champion’s model needs to be upscaled and loss of graphical quality as the textures will look worse if they are upscaled)

If you look at this, you can see that the trees are more clearly defined in LoL than dota, they also have more color variation, this makes them look slightly more cartoony, but it also makes it easier to detect them. The thing with the trees in LoL is also that they are not placed on a walkable path (as in you can’t cut down trees in LoL like you can in Dota)

You will also see that everywhere people are normally going to walk in LoL has a very clearly defined road, whereas in Dota the road is not as clearly defined at all (for instance where that flying thing is there seems to be some sort of road but it blends in so much with the grass it can’t be seen.

Solutions:
1: Thicker roads that are more clearly defined as not being part of the grass, and a higher color variation between the trees and grass

Overall I think it comes down to contrast, and putting less similar colors next to each other. Look here for example

on one side of that road, the road is clearly defined away from the grass which is clearly defined away from the treeline. On the other side we have the road not clearly defined from the grass which is almost exactly the same color, but the treeline is still very clearly defined away from the grass (in other words adding a darker color to the grass next to the road here on that side would solve that problem.

The game looks good, I never had a problem with that, neither game has inferior graphics it’s just that they’re in different style. Dota 2 is in a semi-realistic style whereas League of Legends is cartoony. But bottom line is, I need to be able to see a bigger area around my character to feel comfortable (I even think it’s too low in LoL), and I need to be able to clearly see road from grass from tree to be able to enjoy it. I have no doubt that playing more will allow the graphics to grow on you, but having some sort of option to change the contrast and color vibrance in the game could probably do wonders for “readability” of the playing field and it’s objects.

Lastly; fog of war isn’t dark enough for me to see that it is fog of war and not something in my vision range.

It might also be a cool solution to allow players to use texture pack mods (for the map, not for the characters)

Valve Pulls Support From $1 Million Galaxy Battles ‘Dota 2’ Tournament Due To Filipino Drug Laws

One of the biggest events of the year just lost Valve’s backing.

The Galaxy Battles II Dota 2 tournament was set to be the third $1 million Major of the season, but Valve has now pulled all support and removed it from the Dota Pro Circuit thanks to Filipino drug laws presenting issues for many players.

The 16 team competition was due to take place at the Philippine Arena in Ciudad de Victoria, with the best teams in the world set to compete for a share of $1 million and all important Pro Circuit points that help teams qualify for The International 8. The event was due to start on January 15th, with the final taking place on the 21st, however, now it may not take place at all.

Less than two weeks before the event was due to start, Valve announced they would be pulling all support for the competition. This means that the event will no longer be a part of the Pro Circuit, no Pro Circuit points will be handed out and Valve will not provide $500,000 towards the prize pool as they do for all Majors.

“We have decided to rescind the tournament’s Major designation, including the Pro Circuit qualifying points, for the Galaxy Battles 2018 tournament,” said Valve in a statement. “This is based on what we feel are unreasonable infringements on the privacy of the players, as a condition to enter the country.”

This is all down to the drug laws for esports athletes entering the country. Esports players are now classed as pro sports players in the Philippines and this means they are required to take drug tests before they can compete in the country. Strangely the drugs they are tested for are marijuana and methamphetamine, not performance enhancers.

When you combine these test with the fact that the government is currently targeting drug dealers and users in a war on drugs that has resulted in thousands of deaths, you can see why players may not have wanted to travel to the event and be tested for substances. This becomes more of an issue when you consider that a lot of players come from areas where marijuana is legal.

“For Galaxy Battles in January 2018, the GAB has allowed the organisers to merely submit the original drug results taken in their country and a copy of the facilities’ license/permit/accreditation from their government,” read a statement from the Games and Amusements Board of the Philippines, the organisation responsible for the tests. However, it seems that even this was not enough to convince the teams, and Valve, that the drug laws would not cause issues for the players.

Since Valve made the announcement that support for Galaxy Battles would be dropped a number of teams have officially dropped out of the event. Winners of The International 7, Team Liquid, winners of the ESL One Hamburg Major, Virtus. Pro and winners of the DreamLeague Major, Team Secret, have all dropped out of the tournament, with many more expected to follow in the coming days. All three of these teams are also participating in the ESL One Genting Minor taking place in Malaysia just a few days after Galaxy Battles. Withdrawing from this event will give these teams more time to prepare for the competition that can provide them with Pro Circuit points.

There is a chance that the tournament still goes ahead, with a reduced $500,000 prize pool and no pro points to give out, but that will mostly depend on how many teams decide to drop out of the competition. Other teams taking part in Galaxy Battles are also due to play at ESL One Genting so it would not be a surprise to see them drop out as well.

Already a renowned duellist and scholar of the magnificent world of sorcery, it had never come to mind that Rubick might perhaps be Magus Material until he was in the middle of his seventh murder attempt. As he casually tossed the twelfth of a string of would-be killers from an elevated balcony, it dawned on him how completely uninspired the attempts on his life had become. Where once the disruption of a fingersnap or firehand might have put a joyfulness spring in his step, it had all become so very conventional. He craved greater competition. Therefore, slipping on his combat mask, he did what any wizard searching to ascend the ranks would do: he announced his objective to slay a Magus.

Rubick suddenly discovered that to intimidate one Magus is to make threats them all, and they fell upon him in force. Each adversary’s spell was an inescapable surge of energy, and every assault a determined killing blow. However, very soon something transpired that Rubick’s opponents found unexpected: their skills appeared to turn against them. Inside the magic maelstrom, Rubick laugh to himself, subtly reading and replicating the powers of one in order to cast it against another, spreading chaos among those who had united against him. Charges of betrayal began to soar, and soon the sorcerers turned against each other without realising who was behind their undoing.

When the battle finally ended, all were burned and frozen, soaked and cut and pierced. More than one lay dead by an ally’s craft. Rubick stood apart, aching but delighted in the week’s revelry. Nobody had the vigour to quarrel when he presented his petition of assumption to the Hidden Council, and the Insubstantial Eleven approved as one to grant him the title of Grand Magus.

Pushing

Pushing is the process of clearing enemy creep waves and building up large allied creep waves in order to take down enemy buildings rapidly.

The advantages of pushing [ edit ]

Ultimately, pushing is necessary to win the game. Deciding when to push is a crucial part of the team’s individual strategy, as some lineups reach their peak in the late game, while some lineups have the capability to finish the game very early.

Early pushes put pressure on the enemy team by forcing them to defend their towers. This is an effective way to counter carry heroes, because they require some time and farm to become effective. Killing towers is also a good way to earn gold for the whole team, as every hero gains bounty.

Pushing also serves as a counter to turtling. Enemies trying to turtle will have a hard time earning their farm if your team keeps trying to destroy the enemy’s towers and creep waves. This forces their hand to defend, which usually results in an impending team clash. Most heroes push when the Tower life is low.

Pushing to the enemy, sometimes, can lead to clashing or teamfights.

Summoning abilities, such as Nature’s Prophet ‘s Nature’s Call are excellent pushing abilities, as the summons can attack enemy creeps and buildings, as well as absorb large amounts of damage. Spammable AoE nukes like Death Prophet ‘s Crypt Swarm can quickly take down hostile creep waves and can keep up the push in this way. Heroes with AoE healing abilities, such as Necrophos ‘s Death Pulse , can drastically boost the durability of allied creeps and sustain a push. Some abilities, like Leshrac ‘s Diabolic Edict , or Pugna ‘s Nether Blast , can even deal direct damage to towers.

Most pushing items prov > Arcane Boots and heals can make long trips to the fountain obsolete, so that the whole team can stay outs > Necronomicon prov > Battle Fury or Maelstrom can boost their ability to push the lane even more.

When the enemy team is far away from their base or dead, Boots of Travel can be used to quickly teleport to a vulnerable lane.

Countering pushes [ edit ]

Enemy pushes can be countered in different ways; most of them are very similar to pushing abilities.

To start counter pushing is one ganker of your team will try to attack the enemy hero while defending your tower.

The best counter to a push is ganking. Pushing exposes enemies the closer they get to your base, making ganks much easier to execute. Note, however, that ganking usually is not an anti-push (to prevent it from happening), but merely a good counter to it.

Long range AoE abilities, such as Keeper of the Light ‘s Illuminate and Windranger ‘s Powershot can devastate enemy creep waves from a safe distance and significantly slow their push. Although less effective for defense, summoned units like enchanted neutral creeps can soak up some damage. The most effective defensive summons are Venomancer ‘s Plague Ward , as they are spell immune, deal enhanced damage to creeps and can be summoned in large amounts with low mana cost and cooldown.

Initiation is the most important element of starting a battle. As pushing teams are often clustered and stationary, initiating a fight against them is especially easy. Earthshaker ‘s Echo Slam , coupled with a Blink Dagger , can be a devastating ability against numerous, clustered opponents. However, other intiators or tanky heroes can be used to make the first move as well.

When playing against a pushing lineup, it is important to stick together and to not die one by one, because the enemy can quickly turn a small advantage into some tower or barracks kills. Defensive Observer Wards and moving around with all five players can prevent dangerous situations.

Because heroes like Nature’s Prophet will often attempt to push unprotected lanes, it is extremely crucial to always carry a Town Portal Scroll to defend incoming pushes.

A Rundown of Patch 9.21

League of Legends patch 9.21 is here, along with a new line of skins with a Halloween theme. Several champions have received nerfs due to being above the average power level. A few champions that see little play, especially on the competitive level, have received buffs to increase their chances of being viable. There are also a few interesting bugs that were addressed in this patch. The following is a rundown of patch 9.21, and how it will change the game.

Garen and Shaco Were Overtuned

Garen and Shaco felt a bit too strong following the release of their mini reworks. The nerfs they have received in patch 9.21 should significantly decrease their power level.

Garen

Garen’s damage from his E, Judgment was too high to fight against for most top lane champions. With the addition of the conqueror proc to his E, the healing and true damage stacks almost instantly. This rework shifted Garen’s build to be more damage focused, making Trinity Force and Phantom Dancer core items. The nerfs he has received in patch 9.21 are fairly minor, only removing some of the base damage from his E, but they should still affect his gameplay, and make it easier for enemies to find counterplay.

Shaco

Shaco’s jungle clear speed was incredibly quick following his mini rework. Players were able to immediately clear the Raptor camp with just boxes by placing four down and starting Red Buff. This meant that he would be able to reach level three after Krugs and gank early. Lowering the duration of his W, Jack in the Box, means that he can no longer instantly clear the Raptor camp at the beginning of the game. This nerf will make his jungle clear speed comparable to other jungle champions. The mini rework he received still provides strong improvements to his kit, so he should still see plenty of play moving forward.

Forgotten Champions

Lulu, Kog’Maw and Kayn have become somewhat forgotten, especially in competitive play. Riot Games is addressing this issue in patch 9.21 by providing significant buffs to these champions.

Kayn has received a buff that will benefit both his red and blue transformations. The damage on his Q, Reaping Slash, is being increased by 15 at all levels. This should significantly improve Kayn’s effectiveness and improve upon his weakness in the early game. The bonus damage against monsters has been decreased by 15 to compensate for this buff.

Lulu has seen very little play, as new support champions continue to outclass her. She provides great utility and Crowd Control, but has fallen out of favor for champions like Rakan, Yuumi and Morgana. Dota 2 international solomid garen The damage and shield on her E, Help, Pix!, has been increased to help her scale better into the teamfight stage. It’s still unclear whether she will see more play because of this buff, but Lulu mains can be excited that their champion’s weaknesses are being addressed.

Kog’Maw

Kog’Maw has received a damage buff to his Q, Caustic Spike, and his E, Void Ooze. While these buffs will greatly increase his damage output in lane and in teamfights, they still don’t address his major weakness. Kog’Maw has fallen out of favor due to how immobile he is as a champion, and how easy it is to dive onto him. Champions like Kai’sa and Ezreal are much safer picks that can dish out comparable damage to Kog’Maw.

New Skin Line

Riot Games has released a new skin line alongside patch 9.21 to celebrate the upcoming holiday and League of Legends’ 10th year anniversary. These skins for Miss Fortune, Blitzcrank, Kassadin and Annie all look incredible, and are a great way to show some Halloween spirit on the Rift.

Conclusion

This rundown of patch 9.21 just highlights some of the major changes, but there are several more minor changes and bugfixes that can be found here. Pyke received a nerf that should take away some of the safety he has from grey health, and allow teams to punish him for his mistakes. Maokai, Viktor and Warwick have also received buffs in patch 9.21.

Terrorblade Arcana – “Cursed Black” Prismatic Bug

Hello, dear people, I have a bug to report. It may be pretty old but it is still there even with the new set. I describe it first, then I show you some pictures.

The idea: When you insert a prismatic gem with color into TB arcana, it shall change the color of those particle effects to the color your gem is. Like for example, wirth original Prismatic “Reflection’s Shade” his particles, by that I mean:

– His footsteps (that “fire” after he walks)
– His feet burn (that “fire” at his feet)
– His weapons glow (ambient)
– His Ultimate
– His Head and breast hole “smoke” (ambient)
– His Metamorphosis autoattack projectiles
– The changed death animation and its color
– Chanced color of the circle under hero when he uses Meta

are changed to the color from the gem you put in that arcana. Dota 2 black circles That shall be normal case which works with nearly every gem, except the “Cursed Black” one.

What is wrong here?

First, lets talk about arcana without set:

That’s how default arcana looks like. Autoattack in Meta is red with little black smoke, footsteps are red, feets burn red, hole in breast and head burns red too. Enemy death animation is also red. Sunder sends a red beam with black parts.

That’s how the arcana with one of those green gems looks like. Everything is like with the red one, except any red color is green now.

Now with our problem here: the Cursed Black gem.

Redarding only arcana without set:

-There is absolutely NO weapon glow. Like nothing. It looks like he is just “holding” 2 sticks.
-His footsteps aren’t smoking black. You can only see those yellow steps withhout smoke effect. Nothing.
-His feet also doesn’t burn. No black smoke, nothing.
-His holes in head and breast are black, but they aren’t smoking like with other colors. You just have 2 black holes without any “special” effect.
-His sunder has some black effects like with other gems, but it’s actual color is white/grey. No black sunder.
-When he kills somebody, the kill animation is black, but it looks VERY strange. I can probably upload it later but when he kills someone that target turns into black/green crystals first and disappears very strangely

And regarding his new set:

-With new weapons, which also change color regarding the gem you equip (by default light blue, when you add arcana they turn into color your gem is, for example red): There are NO colored parts. NOTHING. The same like with original weapons: they just look like 2 sticks.

-His AA with Meta (it is black)
-His circle when he uses Meta (it is also black)

You can see what I mean in attachements.

What I want (and probably some other people): Just let him get same particle effects with black color like with other gems. Especially with the new incoming set. If it won’t work like that, I would suggest just turn that black gem a little lighter to be nearly black so it will work (i think thats because of the color code which prevents it to appear).
