OG Makes History as Winners of ‘Dota 2’ The International 2019

OG defeats Team Liqu > By Marc Wong

  • 16,138 Hypes
  • 1Comments

OG is now officially the first-ever back-to-back winners of Dota 2’s yearly world championships, The International (TI), taking home a whopping $15.6 million USD, which accounts for 45.5 percent of the total $34.2 million USD TI9 prize pool.

Dota 2 TI, now in its ninth year, is one of the most watched global esports tournaments and, via their developer Valve’s in-game crowdfunding program, awards the largest single-event prize pool for the last seven years. Each year, Valve’s base developer contribution to TI’s prize pool maintains at $1.6 million USD since it started in 2011, making the Dota 2 player base the sole reason for its dominating competition reward — the epitome of a community celebrated game.

Just a few hours ago, OG (consisting ana, Topson, Ceb, JerAx and team captain, N0tail), defeated Team Liquid (consisting Miracle-, w33, MinD_ContRol, GH and team captain KuroKy), 3-1 in a Best of 5 Grand Finals, not only making them the first two-time TI champions, but also the first to hold up the Aegis of the Immortal back-to-back.

The final game saw OG pick Io (ana), Gyrocopter (Topson), Timbersaw (Ceb), Tiny (JerAx) and Abaddon (N0tail), against a Team Liquid draft of Bristleback (Miracle-), Windranger (w33), Omniknight (MinD_ContRol), Earth Spirit (GH) and Chen (KuroKy).

Perhaps the biggest mistake of Team Liquid in game four was not banning Io, which has been dominating this year’s championship with a final win:lose ratio of 12:4 — “you can’t spell champion without IO!” And it didn’t make it any easier that the support-intended hero was played as a carry by OG’s position one, ana. Dota 2 ti 2011 camaro Additionally, captain N0tail outwitted Team Liquid’s early-game Chen strategy by drafting a position three Timbersaw, played by Ceb, which helped OG drag out the game long enough for ana’s Io to get its items.

In the end, the champion-deciding fountain-diving match lasted only 24.45 minutes, with the obvious MVP, Topson, somewhat ironically playing the position two Gyrocopter — the downfall of Alliance. Topson, a Finnish professional Dota 2 player who only recently entered the Dota 2 competitive scene, made serious headlines last year at TI8 with his versatility and dominance. He excels at unconventional heroes like Zeus and Pugna, and is constantly capable of out-of-the-box strategies like his Diffuser Gyrocopter in said last match of TI9, which heavily handicapped Team Liquid’s Omniknight and Bristleback.

In 2018, OG became the first team to win TI from an open qualifier. This 2019, they dominated from the start, finishing first in their Group Stage, and maintaining 100% Upper Bracket wins at the Main Event. “They are so far ahead of any other team because of the versatility of their playstyle,” said one of the commentators at TI9.

Returning to the winner’s spotlight, an emotional OG Team Captain, N0tail, says: “It’s too hard to believe and it’s too good to be true but it feels good all the same. Thank you everyone for making this possible and I’m an animal apparently!”

TI9 was held on Chinese soil for the first time ever at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, and it was earlier announced that TI10 in 2020 will be held in Stockholm. Click the video below to watch the highlights of the TI9 Grand Finals.

TI9 Predictions | Betting tips and odds

The International (TI 9) begins August 15, 2019 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. Dota 2 ti 3 qualifiers definition Eighteen teams from the six global regions will battle for their share of the

31 million USD TI9 prize pool. Europe is the most represented region at this year’s event with 6 out of the 18 teams representing the region. The second most represented region is China with 4 teams.

© Dota 2 The International

The regular 2018/19 season went the way of Team Secret, who managed to win two of the five majors and end up 2 nd or 3 rd in others. In fact, out of the twelve teams with direct Invites to the The International only 3 teams (2 Secret, 1 Virtus. Pro, 2 Vici Gaming) managed to secure a win at one of the five Majors. TI9 Regional qualifiers were held in July 2019 to determined the six final participants at the event. Two former champions Na’Vi (2011) and Newbee (2014) secured their spot at the event through regional qualifiers. The qualifiers were divided by country: Europe, CIS, North America, China, Southeast Asia. Dota 2 ti 3 qualifiers definition TI 9 European Qualifiers took place between July 11 th – 14 th .

This season resulted in six out of the eight previous Champions qualifying for the The International 2019.

Fantasy leagues and betting providers are buzzing with TI9 betting odds and coefficients already. In order to stay ahead of the curve and prepare our readers for the upcoming festivities we aim to create the ultimate Dota 2 TI9 predictions out there.

Below are our predictions Dota 2 TI9 predictions categorized by odds and value.

Place your Dota 2 TI9 bets with Unikrn:

Outright winner

We begin our TI9 betting guide with the mother-of-all predictions “Outright Winner” of The International 2019. Dota 2 betting sites and analysts are favoring Team Secret as the team with the highest chance of winning. For those that prefer safe betting, our choice is instead Vici Gaming as the team with the best chance at winning. If you are looking to place a longshot bet at a winner and net better winnings look no further than Virtus. Pro. It offers the best “bang for your buck” bet out of the attending teams while also being a relatively likely winner.

As tradition goes, each year thousands of predictions are made about the outright winner and less then 1% percent of the analysis is on point. Taking such high probability of upsets and uncertainty into account, Virtus. Pro is the best value and odds bet for the Outright Winner at The International (2019).

Group Stage

On the 14 th of August 2019, Valve announced the group draw for The International 2019: Group Stage. At first glance, both groups of nine are somewhat equal in balance, making for an interesting opportunity for TI9 fantasy pick’ems and bets. The odds for teams advancing out of the Group Stage and into the winner/loser bracket stage still favor the best performers from the Regular Season.

Group A

  • Team Secret
  • Team Liquid
  • TNC Predator
  • PSG LGD
  • Chaos Esports
  • Keen Gaming
  • Alliance
  • Mineski
  • Newbee

Group B

  • Virtus. ro
  • Vici Gaming
  • Evil Geniuses
  • Fnatic
  • Ninjas in Pyjamas
  • OG
  • Infamous
  • Natus Vincere
  • Royal Never Give Up

A plethora of bets and fantasy picks became available after the groups were announced varying from “Average deaths per player” to “Champion versus champion pick amounts”. Some of these betting categories are so outrageous to predict. A specific TI meta will evolve during the event and game times and player performance will vary greatly based on the evolving meta. Dota 2 ti 3 qualifiers definition We would advise against trying to predict any of these outcomes unless you are a 5000iq 5head.

As for more reasonable prediction categories we would single out:

  • Team eliminated from Group A: Mineski
  • Team eliminated from Group B: Infamous
  • Teams to advance to Winner Bracket out of Group A: Secret, Liquid, PSG. LGD, TNC Predator
  • Teams to advance to Winner Bracket out of Group B: Vici Gaming, Virtus. Pro, OG, Evil Geniuses
  • Group A points leader: Team Secret
  • Group B points leader: Vici Gaming

For a day by day prediction of match outcomes we have prepared the following news articles:

Outright bets

A plethora of Dota 2 TI 2019 outright bets are available at various betting sites. Based on current and past TI9 betting odds and results, we predict the following outcomes:

Items

The initial items are fairly basic, and are also in the shop as a recommendation.
The 2 gauntlets of strength really help bump up your early damage and health as well as Regen, you can supplement with branches if you prefer, since you could have a double stun team and need the extra mana, but i prefer the extra gauntlet simply because it makes your tidebringer attack that much stronger.

The tango, healing salve and mana pot are there just for that.

Power boots are a must of course. You have to have speed, the str bonus, and the attack speed helps when your chasing people down after a torrent or x marks the spot. The multiple bracers and vanguard help with the tankiness, just giving him more survivability, while the bracers also help with his low intell gain from levels that you’re going to need with mass torrents and x marks the spot.
The Crystalis is extremely useful for tidebringer. If you catch an ult on it, and the subsequent daedalus, it goes into tidebringer unleashing large crits in a massive aoe, making this hero extremely dangerous in teamfights and extremely good at farming lanes and jungles. Lastly the helm of the dominator further increases his survivability by giving healthsteal and the +5 armor bonus.

Daedalus is just an obvious upgrade to Crystalis, making Kunkka deal that much more damage, and the satanic and heart are to further increase his tankiness to the maximum level so you can take hits and deal out mass t >

Skills

This skill build is for aoe damage and mostly for a solo lane.

Your maxing out tidebringer so you can keep the damage on your opposing hero in lane. If you can, play it smart against ranged opponents. Every-time your c/d comes up, run up and slash a creep making sure that the opponent is directly behind it, so you do damage to him as well, then run backwards to stay out of his range.
There is a range to tidebringer, but the tidebringer is fairly large.
Once you have level 2 torrent at level 4, try to wear down your opponent to about half or hopefully a little under half health. Once there, position your torrent touching him and slightly behind him, so if they try to run they get hit anyways, then throw out another tide bringer right on them, or at the creeps near you with the opponent behind. If they run, which they should since they’re very close to dead, chase them and try to torrent where they’re running when the c/d is up, if not, just keep chasing and once the creeps get near, attack them with the opponent behind again and it should kill them. Easy first-bloods with this hero since Tidebringer is extremely op early game.

I’m assuming for mid game your around levels 8-16.
You’ll have all your skills set, including your x marks the spot at level 2 which is very useful for ganking and that’s what Kunkka is all about. At this point you have at least power boots, and vanguard. So your a little beefy(high health) do decent damage, and have a good attack speed.
I’m going to make two scenarios here, and what you should do in each, it should b all around.

Scenario One, the Team Fight:

Hopefully you have some aoe fighters with you to keep the damage up with your ultimate(Ghost Ship) and your torrent landing. Throw a torrent as the initiator, right on the heroes in the front, it stuns and slows them, making it hard to get away. As soon as you throw the torrent, click on your ghost ship to be just in front of the enemies in the back, the ghost ship always goes forward a bit of an extra distance from what you selected it, so keep that in mind as you position it. Try to get the ghost ship to go through your teammates as it “delays” damage(makes your damage halved for a short time, but then it will all come back to you) and speeds you up as well. When the torrent lands the ghost ship is already on it’s way, attack the first hero/creep in front of you to effect tidebringer, then use an x marks the spot on anybody that tries to get away, at full level 4 that will last for 4 seconds on delay, but since we’re at level 2, throw another torrent down if it’s off c/d yet and it should b almost immediately after x marks the spot affects the enemy hero, where you can again slash with tidebringer and with the rest of your teammates damage break down the last of the opponents.

With the above scenario in mind, I’m going to assume you know how torrent/tidebringer and ghost ship/x marks the spot work so we’ll gloss that over.

With a stunner, have your stunner hit the opponent first, throw a torrent down as soon as you see it, and a ghost ship if you have it right after just like the previous scenario. Run up and tidebringer the opponent and x marks the spot right after. Pretty much easy-mode after that.

For late game, try to time your shadow blade. Torrent the opponent, then shadow blade up and attack as they’re landing. The first attack out of the ghost walk will add 150 damage, plus if you have Daedalus it stacks with the crit and that’s a whole lot of damage, x marks the spot after, and if they try to run and it’s narrow, throw a ghost ship at them. The Cooldown is fairly short and immediately after you can torrent and ghostwalk t >

Summary

Overall Kunkka is one of my favorite heroes in any game ever.
He’s just easy to use, easy to understand, if you get the right items and land your torrents and ghost ships, it’s game. He’s great vs. invis heroes because his t >

Dota 2 International 2015: Final Day

In yesterday’s report on The International, I said that we could only hope that the remaining teams at The International had a few tricks left up their sleeves, or the last games would be foregone conclusions. Fortunately, LGD, CDEC, and Evil Geniuses all showed up with some surprises. But nobody was as surprising as the new 2015 International champion, Evil Geniuses.

Match of the Day: EG vs. CDEC

There wasn’t a dull moment on the last day of The International. Evil Geniuses played brilliant games that showed their strengths at every aspect of the game, from hero pools for each player to drafting to farming to fighting. But it wouldn’t have been half as much fun watching them win if they hadn’t had such good opponents throughout this final day.

Yet it was the Grand Final against CDEC that drew out the best of EG. Sumail’s Storm Spirit weathered an onslaught of ganks yet somehow ended up ahead on farm anyway and left the rest of his team free to start going to work on CDEC. As EG started to hit a power-spike in the mid-game, CDEC torn to pieces. It established a problem that CDEC were never able to solve: they could either shut-down SumaiL and let Fear and UNiVeRsE start taking over the map, or they could try and contain Fear and UNiVeRsE and leave Sumail to get out of control.

A poor draft from EG in the second game let CDEC back into the series, as EG gave up Leshrac and then CDEC picked a Broodmother into Sumail’s Windranger. The mid-lane Broodmother seemed to throw EG off their game and they never really found their footing against CDEC, who took a fairly smooth win over an EG that sometimes seemed too desperate to make plays.

Yet EG refused to be afraid of Leshrac, arguably the single strongest hero in the game, and leaving him open for CDEC baited them into picking him again and again. CDEC got the hero again in Game 3, but this time EG were able to get control of themselves, start playing a little more cautiously, and start taking control of the match. They also started respecting CDEC’s use of Smoke of Deceit a bit more, and would pull back from any vulnerable locations when they realized they’d lost track of CDEC, which shut down CDEC’s ganking game and let EG regain the initiative.

With their tournament lives on the line, CDEC opted for a different kind of lineup in game 4, ditching Leshrac for a Dragon Knight… but at the cost of giving EG their dream draft. Sumail was back on Storm Spirit. UNiVeRsE had Earthshaker, and Fear had Gryrocopter, And just to make sure EG could control every engagement, ppd was on Ancient Apparition while Aui was on Naga Siren.

CDEC held their own despite the strength of EG’s lineup, yet didn’t quite give it the respect it deserved. It all led to the single greatest moment of the Grand Final, where CDEC’s International dreams slipped away in the space of a few ill-chosen seconds.

Seriously, watch that again. Don’t watch the animations, just look at the health bars for CDEC after they star that Roshan. That’s how quickly CDEC lost The International.

State of Play

1st Place: Evil Geniuses
2nd Place: CDEC Gaming
3rd Place: LGD Gaming
4th Place: Vici Gaming
5th-6th: EHOME, Virtus. pro
7th-8th: MVP Phoenix, Team Secret
9th-12th: Team Empire, Cloud9, CompLexity, Invictus
13th-16th: Newbee, Na’Vi, Fnatic, MVP Hot6ix

Talking Points

  • MMY’s Finest and Final Hour

CDEC’s last-minute annihilation in Game 4 of the final was hardly the only throw of the day. LGD’s Lei “MMY” Zengrong went from hero to zero in the space of his second game against EG. After making one of the most astonishing clutch Rubick plays of the tournament, he threw away LGD’s rally by over-pursuing EG on the back of a great team fight for LGD.

He tunnel-visioned on EG’s ppd and chased him deep into the Radiant jungle alone, where he got sniped by Aui and let EG turn the entire game as they rushed back to Dire side and killed off the rest of LGD. MMY’s over-eagerness caused a gold swing north of 10,000 by the end of the fight, and guaranteed that LGD would have to settle for third.

EG’s Saahil “UNiVeRsE” Arora played like a legend on this final day of The International, with some of the coldest and calmest moves of the tournament. Look at this escape from an LGD gank.

That pretty much summed up his night. He was managing every engagement down to the last microsecond and the last hitpoint.

  • Closing the Deal

A great night of Dota ended with a some regrettable moments. The Evil Geniuses team themselves, despite having given North America its biggest tournament win ever in eSports, proved to be one of the least animated and charismatic groups of people in professional gaming. It was like the booth opened and five Smokin’ Jay Cutlers stepped out.

Fear later explained that everyone was exhausted and wanted to go home, but still…

it was a huge moment that everyone wanted to share, and Evil Geniuses kind of poured cold water all over it. It’s one thing to seem overcome or speechless in the face of a huge event, but EG’s collective “meh” was utterly deflating.

An inscrutable performance from Deadmau5 didn’t help matters. No sooner had EG shrugged their way off the stage than a hyped up crowd was being treated to some of chillest house music this side of a W Hotel bar at 8 AM. Then the Canadian started playing Avicii’s “Levels” and cut the the music off mid-track, and ran from the stage flapping his arms.

It was a strange way to finish crowning a world champion.

Looking Ahead

That does it for the 2015 International and the 2014-15 Dota season that revolved around it. The next time Valve hosts one of these, it should be a new era for Dota 2. The Dota Majors series promises to reshape the Dota calendar and hopefully make it easier for casual fans to follow the game, as well as give teams more reasons to stay together between Internationals.

But more importantly, this tournament seemed to mark a changing of the guard. China, always the strongest overall region at these tournaments, had another terrific showing, but the twist was that it was the upstart CDEC team that turned in the best performance, followed by a retooled LGD squad, while many of the giants of Chinese Dota came up short.

Alliance weren’t even there. Team Secret were a bit of a disappointment despite their star lineup, Na’Vi were eliminated at the start… and in the end, it was a North American team of veterans and a star Pakistani rookie who broke China’s grip on this tournament and gave North America its greatest victory in eSports to date.

Will that change things? Will North America finally have a MOBA scene it can be proud of, and will the next year of pro Dota feature more North American teams following in EG’s footsteps, more Korean teams traveling the path that MVP blazed these last years, and a new generation of Chinese and European talent overturning the old order?

Tonight, it seems like anything is possible.
